Review

"It should be noted here that Woodard died before this book was published; it is a shame that he could not see his daring work enter debate. Praise must go to Joyce and McBride, moreover, for their careful and attentive editorial work that made this publication of this text possible. . . . Woodard's career would surely have been even bolder after this book, but this text's interruption into critical theory alone is itself worth celebrating."-American Studies"We have all read about the hunger of slaves whose masters sought to starve them into submission. But The Delectable Negro asks of these slaves: 'How does it feel to be an edible, consumed object?' Inverting the trope of slave hunger, Vincent Woodard provocatively suggests that the slaveholder is a parasite who feeds off the slave’s body in acts that range from cannibalistic to sexual modes of consumption, especially the homoerotic. In an even greater provocation, however, Woodard argues that within the black community, hunger is transformed into a regenerative space from which the search for home and communal belonging may be initiated. A bold and brilliant book."-Carla L. Peterson, author of Black Gotham: A Family History of African Americans in Nineteenth-Century New York City“The Delectable Negro is a brilliant, fearless, and deeply political book.”-Early American Literature“With unflinching clarity, The Delectable Negro exposes and examines the pervasive cultural fantasies that have rendered the enslaved black body into a consumable object from the eighteenth century to the present. […] [I]ts powerful insights will continue to generate new lines of important inquiry for years to come.”-American Historical Review“The Delectable Negro uncovers a compelling set of themes in the scholarship on U.S. slave culture: white cannibalism as a significant trope for white depletion of, and desire for, the laboring and eroticized black male body. In a stunning series of arguments, Woodard forces us to reconsider the historical out-of-hand rejection of black African fear (and, not rarely, claims) of white cannibalism, showing how remarkably wide-reaching was the sense that slavery satisfied some sadomasochistic instinct among the slave-owning class.”-Maurice O. Wallace, author of Constructing the Black Masculine

Disturbing facts in this book. Arrived in beautiful condition. I bought it for my husband to ad to his book collection on our African American culture and history! Its a very disturbing book to read but teaching us a lot!

It's a shame that Vincent Woodard never lived to see this book published. "The Delectable Negro" takes readers through the grisly hidden history of literal and metaphoric cannibalism during the US slavery era. Woodard connects cannibalism and consumption specifically to homoeroticism, both among slave men and the continual threat and perpetration of rape upon slave bodies. It's a very heavy book, but Woodard sheds light on a context for US slavery that crucially pushes back against modern apologist/revisionist perspectives that fail to recognize the profound violence and dehumanization of chattel slavery.

This book forces one to investigate some thoughts that was previously unspeakable and definitely not written about the human consumption and homoeroticism during U.S. Slave culture.

The terrible American story.

Great Read!

Incredible book. I am not a sociologist or anything, I just picked this up. So I find it heady but VERY worthwhile to read. I'm learning so so much and I appreciate all the research and analysis that went into it.

Could not follow the author's writing.

I heard a lecture by a PH.D Scientist and he made references from this book. The lecture was for powerful!!!

The stories were good, but there were missed opportunities to make them more interesting and less predictable. Oh and the only "wicked" lord was the first one. My main problems, though, were the grammatical mistakes. You can call it editing issues if you want, but if the mistake is the word "then" instead of "than" and vice versa, I have to assume it's the writer, not the editor; otherwise, how would it have the wrong word there in the first place? Spell check or autocorrect did not switch them! That is almost as unforgivable as using the wrong "your" for "you're!"

I randomly bought this because the author is new to me and the stories seemed sweet and romantic. I just finished a book that turned out to be heavy on the erotic and steamy scenes so I was hoping this book was going to help me regain the innocence I lost (roll eyes hahaha). Anyway, this book was not an entirely wholesome and clean romance but I enjoyed reading it.If you prefer a perfectly edited and historically accurate description of the culture and norms and etiquette of the time period of the story then this book might not be for you. I did not mind so I just read on and enjoyed it. Each book has its well-balanced characters. The heroines are sweet, innocent and yet shows maturity and genuineness. The heroes are titled, handsome, dashing and charming and with just a little bit of intensity to them. I like that each book has its own unique plot.

Earl of Sussex3 StarsI enjoyed the story, but it was incredibly short! I think the length made the characters' actions toward the end come across kind of rushed; I would have liked to have seen more explanation behind their chosen actions, to make them feel less recklessly impulsive. From here, the story diverges into two different series - one continued by the same author, and the other a mini-world composed of multiple authors' novellas - so I look forward to reading more of both.My Duke's Seduction4 StarsThis book follows Tricia, the sister of Tabbie, heroine of the novella directly preceding this one.Tricia's goal at the beginning of the book is to find her missing cousin, not wanting him to end up dead - particularly since her family is already under stress from her father's illness. Finding herself in a seedy part of town, she is rescued by Ryker, who agrees to help her, and subsequently falls madly in love with her.Now that I've finished the book, I am curious to know what happens with the cousin - so I'm hoping his story is included in one of the later books in the series. My Duke's Deception4 StarsMatthew (a friend of the two heroes from the previous books) is on a self imposed mission to find his runaway sister, while Ella is an orphaned former lady who is trying to provide for herself after her father dies and leaves her with nothing. When Matthew accidentally causes her to lose her job, he enlists her help as a translator to continue searching for his sister. While the storyline isn't unbelievable, the timeline is. I'm pretty sure they go from barely meeting to engaged in less than a week. Otherwise, though, I enjoyed the characters and the book as a whole.

The characters were engaging, but the situations felt contrived and unrealistic to the time period. Perhaps if each had been developed more fully into a standard-length novel, the author would have had more space to weave nuance into the plot. I enjoyed the Cinderella-style rescue of the heroine in the the third book the most, as the heroine had more to overcome than her own impulsiveness.

Each book had similarities but still different enough to be enjoyed. Characters were likeable although with flaws and harmful past experiences. Enjoyed reading of previous family or friends is book two and three. Appreciated the epilogue.

I always love a strong woman in a books. They were willing to help others and able to make a difference in the world. The hero was able to see this in them and able to fall in love with them because of this.

I really liked the Wicked Lords of London and how fast they fell when they met that special heroine. It proves the adage that former Rakes make the best husbands!

Interesting characters and believable plots. Thoroughly enjoyed all three of this series. Didn't want the stories to end. Tammy handles all aspects of her stories very well!

I bought this as a gift for a precocious toddler who absolutely adores books. Her ideal day is spent wandering from book to book, preferably with you reading all of them out loud to her. What I like about this book is that it's open-ended. You can talk about the pictures in any way that you like. There are no words and -- like viewing a painting in a museum -- there is no single right way to react. You can respond to the cover art as "tied" and "untied," but you can also choose neat/messy, or new/old, or tying/sitting, or any other combination of words you choose.Furthermore, just because the pictures include opposites, and the title mentions opposites, there are no rules which say you have to take notice of the opposites. You could just as easily choose to talk about the colors, or shapes, or what's in the background. Because of this, I think this book is well suited for kids who don't want to "sit still and listen." It's a book that is well-suited for interaction and discussion. So ultimately, what I like about this book is that it requires you to engage your brain, and to respond yourself, instead of accepting a path that was pre-determined by the author.Of course, that's exactly what offended this particular toddler about this book: She was looking forward to someone else reading aloud to her, and was rather surprised to discover that not all books are like that. After an inspection to verify that there were, indeed, no words printed on the pages, she took away the "defective" picture book and brought out another for me to read to her.

This book is clearly old school. There are no words, only photographs that are artistic and realistic. The photographs are easy to make up stories to tell and teach your little one about the concept of opposites. Also, the photographs offer your child a way to see art in the world around them.Strange book in its way, but highly recommended.

Very old book but great examples of opposites for children

I teach preschool. Mostly a 3 year old class and the kids loved this one. I use it when we are reviewing opposites. The color photos make it a little different than one that is all drawings.

The ideas of opposites in a few of the pictures are harder for younger children to understand, but for the most part the book works.

My daughter's preschool had this book on their recommendation list to help teach kids oppisites. This book has no words only pictures of oppisites, like a page of eggs next to a page of broken eggs, boy on hammock, and hammock alone.Great book, beautiful pictures. My 2 and 4 year olds, loved it, and much like the Carl books you make up your own story.
