This was one of the first of intrepid reporter, Robert Kaplan's, many timely and insightful Atlantic Monthly articles turned into a book. Kaplan has "made his bones" (and a stellar reputation) going where the action is. And then, even while measuring the temperature on the ground, never failing to raise his head above the trees to see where the forest leads. This ability to place the events on the ground into geostrategic context has made Kaplan a valuable resource to those of us who like to know how we get our superpower tail caught in so many costly and draining strategic traps. Here, although we are forced to admit that some aspects of geopolitics are inevitable and almost always unforgiving and irreversible, this story is still about as unflattering as a strategic incursion can get: Severely burnt by the dumb anti-Communist domino geopolitics of Vietnam, the U.S., nevertheless could not wait to repeat the act in the most unforgiving and godforsaken land since Alexander the Great was defeated there in the 4th Century BC.Thus there is a kind of poetic symmetry that after Vietnam, our next foreign policy folly would be Afghanistan. That it is an unforgiving trap that all the history we know of (and have actually experienced ourselves) tells us it is, with perfect 20-20 hindsight, we nevertheless willingly walked into the same trap. [The Russians must be laughing under their collectivist breaths.]Because of our colossal ignorance of the lands and peoples we pretend to be assisting while actually in pursuit of our own geopolitical goals, we had no choice but to enlist and rely on the Pakistan intelligence service (CIS) as a proxy in our global plan to eject the Soviets from Afghanistan. This barely transparent plan apparently worked to perfection, except that none of the "after conflict loose ends" were tied up. It seems that it is a hallmark of U.S. foreign policy that loose ends are never tied up. The conflicts are just allowed to peter out, with the hope that the details will somehow work them selves out in the end. [Remember the last scene in "Charlie Wilson's War?]As usual, the Pakistani CIS exacted a price for serving as our geopolitical proxy. The price was that they be allowed to hijack our strategic success for their own internal purposes. As a result, in the aftermath of the victory over Russia, the CIS had us back the wrong Afghan tribal horse. When the dust settled, the internecine virus called Afghanistan warlords, had metastasized into Osama bin Laden, who immediately turned on his erstwhile superpower arms supplier and backer.Nine-eleven sealed the deal and enshrined this folly for perpetuity. Now, we cannot get out, no matter how much its costs in U.S. blood and treasure. There is nothing left to do but to allow it to run its costly and indeterminate course. The loose ends can never be tied up. Obama is not in the driver's seat; the tribal warlords are: as they have always been. We are just a hapless superpower again being dragged around by our tail by a ragtag bunch of "Soldiers of God." God help us. Five Stars

In terms of lives lost and people seeking refuge, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and resulting conflict with the mujahadeen is one of the biggest wars of recent times, but also one of the least understood. Robert Kaplan was a journalist covering the conflict, based mainly in Peshawar, but often sneaking across the border into Afghanistan under the guidance of mujahadeen fighters. Kaplan knew personally many of the mujahadeen commanders and he is candid in his portrayal of his interviews in both Pakistan and Afghanistan.More importantly, 'Soldiers of God' is a great insight into the tribal culture and mentality of the rugged mountain people. When you learn of their endurance and persistence in the face of massive obstacles, it seems little wonder that the behemoth US war machine is having so much trouble subduing the Taliban. The resourcefulness and mental fortitude of the Afghan people is amazing. If only all journalists could report with such competence and objectivity.

The text was a pleasure to read, introducing a perspective to an account that I am very unfamiliar with, and have since been inspired to pursue further.Mr. Kaplan writes in an easily-readable format very appropriate for a journalist and correspondent. Many of the lines and information provided are delivered in a punchy manner that appropriately shocks and incenses when desired. I was able to casually read the book but not necessarily put it down, enjoying digesting the text. Not a criticism but more a personal frustration, I found myself infinitely eager to discover more texts such as this one, possibly viewing the same persons that Kaplan interviewed and traveled with at greater depth and in different perspectives.I purchased this book based on the Marine Commandants reading list in addition to a slew of others off Amazon, and thus far every book has been thought-provoking and captivating.

Excellent. Kaplan has hit another one out of the park. It behooves every thinking person to know who the "Soldiers of God" are and what drives them. Kaplan does this up close and personal with his travels in Afghanistan and Pakistan. I have been in Quetta and met a lot of the same folks, but didn't really have it in context at the time. Kaplan has elucidated the context and the people. You may not like all you read here, but you will be much better informed. The "war" in Afghanistan-Pakistan is not over, it's just entering a new stage and these guys are key players.

I've been reading Kaplan for years. He has a unique way of exploring an issue or region of the world and bringing it home for the reader in a way that balances history, politics, and culture with a touch of the exotic. Kaplan also has a keep grasp of the world and where it is going. Reading Kaplan is always interesting, provocative, and thought-provoking. I would recommend any book he's written as a good read. This book covers his time among the Afghan rebels during the Soviet invasion. While the material is somewhat dated, it is also uniquely apropos to today when Afghanistan is once again important, yet ignored, as it was in the 1980s.

my fourth kaplan book & it was excellent, written in the 1980-90's; if only gw bush, cheney rumfeld & the rest of the neo conservative band had read this with an open mind (if that was possilbe) maybe we could have avoided a war that after 13 yrs has lost the USA lives, limbs & treasure for little results; this book will shed much light on why afganistan has withstood far stronger countries who have tried to change her with no real success over the course of 2000+ yrs; a great read, well written as his other books have been & i look forward to reading more of kaplan's books

Review

"The Church Curmudgeon is one of the most intelligently hilarious people on Twitter. His stuff is screenshot-and-text-to-your-friends funny." ~ Adam Ford, founding editor at The Babylon Bee, author of Thy Kingdom Comics, and writer and cartoonist at Adam4d.com "If Twitter had been around in the eighteenth century, Dr. Samuel Johnson s tweets would have looked a lot like this. Such wit. Such pith. Such bite. Such fun." ~ Karen Swallow Prior, Ph.D., author of Booked and Fierce Convictions: The Extraordinary Life of Hannah More Poet, Reformer, Abolitionist "The Church Curmudgeon got me in trouble. One of his tweets popped up on my phone and I started laughing right as the pastor got to 'he was crushed for our iniquities' in his sermon. Consistently and reverently humorous in 140 characters or less, the Church Curmudgeon is one of the best reads online and just as good on old-fashioned, curmudgeonly paper." Erick Erickson, radio host and founder of The Resurgent blog "If I am scrolling through my Twitter feed and laugh out loud, the odds are very high that Church Curmudgeon landed another one." ~ Douglas Wilson, long-time pastor and author of Evangellyfish "Who knew simmering resentment could be so much fun? Church Curmudgeon's regular gripes and mordant observations are a balm to my soul -- that sort of balm that stings like nettles and leaves a permanent red mark." -- Phil Johnson, executive director of Grace to You

About the Author

Church Curmudgeon is the old guy who sits on the back pew of the sanctuary, farthest from the drums (he measured). He began Tweeting to bring balance to the cyber-continuum, which was leaning towards young and dumb, and to help people build character by overcoming obstacles (he is usually that obstacle). You can also find his complaints on Twitter (@ChrchCurmudgeon) and Facebook.

"The Best of the Church Curmdugeon, Then Tweets My Soul" by David Regier is a hilarious book that will be enjoyed by anyone familiar with the current American church culture, at least in the evangelical circles.Originating from the tweets written by the author on his popular Twitter account, this very short book is a real delight. It is always a good thing to be able to laugh at oneself and this book helps us to do that.I read through the whole volume in a short sitting. I enjoyed it so much that I immediately bought a copy for a friend who is also. a fan of the Church Curmudgeon's writings.

Our son was downstairs in the living room, laughing hysterically. "Dad, you gotta see this." I discover him poring through my copy of "Then Tweets My Soul: The Best of the Church Curmudgeon". (I'm hoping that my son hands the book back to me, at some point.) Whenever the Curmudgeon delivers another gem into the Twittersphere, it's a remarkably consistent haymaker across the plate, a wide mix of the satirical to the sardonic. @ChrchCurmudgron was the first to launch as a "Twitter anon", as they are now known. Numerous have followed and none come close; it is only fitting that David Regier would be the first to bridge the intra-media gap, from the web to text, and bring the Church Curmudgeon to book form and to the hands of my (still) laughing son.

This is a short, funny book that I would recommend to anyone who has had a gripe about worships songs, the pastor's sermons, technology in the church and where everyone eats lunch after the service. Being a woman of a certain age, I laughed out loud often because I have been in church culture my whole life and some of the tweets are spot on. Want a new and better perspective on your own church and your attitudes towards it? Read this book and laugh along with the author. Then go hug your worship leader.

If you are familiar with church culture, then you will find mirth in this book. David Regier knows the subject matter well, and lovingly lampoons it, interspersed with puns of the highest caliber.Keep in mind, this is a collection from his Twitter history. It is a collection of quips, not prose. If you have seen the Church Curmudgeon on Twitter, then you know what you are getting. It isn't new content, but it is fantastic content and I'm glad it was compiled.

Funny Stuff! I follow The Church Curmudgeon on Twitter, so this collection was a must for me. If you find humor in church culture, or if you just enjoy "grumpy old man"-style humor, this is right up your alley. Can't wait for the next book!

David Regier has set himself up as the king of curmudgeonly Christian comedy on Twitter; it's no surprise that his book (which is largely just a collection of the Church Curmudgeon's tweets over the years) is just as good. After I had received it, I read through it the first time in about a half hour. It's not a very substantial work, but each 140-characters-or-less tweet is just as funny as the next. I occasionally laughed out loud, especially at the Greek puns. Definitely worth the money. It will most assuredly serve as my favored "bathroom book" for many years.

I would say that the church curmudgeon is hilarious, but I'm afraid that would only encourage him.

This a short collection of tweets that only someone steeped in the church could really enjoy. But enjoy it they will! It's full of puns and groan-worthy jokes about church. It'd make a great gift for anyone who works in a church.

"Fascinating. . . . The overall argument [is] eloquent and probing." --The New York Times"A new approach . . . refreshing, thoughtful, and human. Sen's optimism and no-nonsense proposals leave one feeling that perhaps there is a solution." --Business Week"The . . . perspective that Mr. Sen describes and advocates has great attractions.  Chief among them is that, by cutting through the sterile debate for or against the market, it makes it easier to ask sharper questions about public policy." --The Economist

From the Inside Flap

By the winner of the 1988 Nobel Prize in Economics, an essential and paradigm-altering framework for understanding economic development--for both rich and poor--in the twenty-first century. Freedom, Sen argues, is both the end and most efficient means of sustaining economic life and the key to securing the general welfare of the world's entire population. Releasing the idea of individual freedom from association with any particular historical, intellectual, political, or religious tradition, Sen clearly demonstrates its current applicability and possibilities. In the new global economy, where, despite unprecedented increases in overall opulence, the contemporary world denies elementary freedoms to vast numbers--perhaps even the majority of people--he concludes, it is still possible to practically and optimistically restain a sense of social accountability. Development as Freedom is essential reading.

In Development as Freedom, Amartya Sen tells us that the process of development is best understood as expansion of the freedoms that people enjoy in five spheres: political, economic, social, transparency (in the sense that important information is available to the public), and personal security. Each of these types of freedoms reinforce one another and contribute to outcomes such as higher incomes, better health, and longevity. Sen quotes Peter Bauer, an iconoclast in the development field, as saying that "I regard the extension of the range of choice, that is, an increase in the range of effective alternatives open to the people, as the principle objective and criterion of economic development; and I judge a measure principally by its probable effects on the range of alternatives open to individuals."Sen points out that markets are not simply a means to an end but rather a fundamental freedom. All people want to enter into exchanges with others, and this is how people everywhere behave unless they are prevented from doing so. Sen shows that markets are not an expression of rapacious self-interest but rather are dependent on virtues such as trust and rectitude. Seen in this light, market exchanges are an expression of deep human needs. Yet Sen realizes that markets have limitations and he argues for non-market decisions to optimally provide for education, health care, protection of the environment, and prevention of the grossest inequalities in income distribution. As an illustration of the interrelationships between the different types of freedoms, and between these freedoms and economic outcomes, Sen explains the Asian economic crises of the late 1990s as partly a result of a lack of transparency: that is, a lack of public participation in reviewing financial and business arrangements. Had they been able to, members of the public likely would have demanded greater transparency and the crises might have been averted; however, authoritarian political arrangements prevented effective demands for transparency. And, once the crises struck, the response of governments in the region was inadequate. Had these governments been democratically accountable, they would have responded more quickly and forcefully to boost employment and otherwise cushion the impact of the crises on the poorest members of their societies.Sen, the winner of the 1998 Nobel Prize in economic science, has aimed this work at a general audience. For specialists, though, the book offers an extended discussion of methodological issues introduced by Sen's view of development as freedom, more than 50 pages of end notes, and an index of names and subjects. This book will be an adventure for readers interested in the greatest problem us at the outset of the 21st century: how can the poorest people in the world live better lives?

Development as Freedom is one of the most well written books on the value of freedom in society. It touches upon the values economists should emphasize (and often don't) and the errors made in the name of paternalism and a state that lead economic life. It is a book to be added to the likes of The Road to Serfdom (Hayek) and Capitalism and Freedom (Friedman). For such important and clear thinking Sen is worth the Nobel prize. In terms of economics, Sen makes the clear case that it is freedom and not wealth that should be maximized. He defines a freedom as anything we have a reason to value, which is different than the usual definition and will strike many as strange, but accepting his definition is key to understanding and agreeing with the value of freedom in society. For example, we may want growth to get development, but development can also be defined as extended life expectancy (the freedom to enjoy more years alive) or less hunger (the freedom to avoid hunger).I highly recommend Development as Freedom to anyone interested in development. As someone from a developing country, Sen is particularly attuned with the realities and the policies that are able to bring freedom, and hence development, to the developing world.

Sen's work helps to create a humane worldview in which we can humanely conceptualize development today. His view of an interconnected system of freedoms that are both the ends and means of development is fascinating. Development as Freedom manages to make this concept very approachable while not compromising the core values in which it hopes to instill. I would certainly recommend this book to those actively working in the field of development, as well as those who want to expand their understanding of how to address poverty and aid the oppressed. It should be noted that Sen does use a broad stroke approach that may leave the reader with questions about specific strategic interventions, but addressing these more detail oriented scenarios was not the author's intent.

Amartya Sen has been assailed as haven written a piece of liberal utopian propaganda, but he does have a valid argument that democracy does have a preventive place in human suffering noting that famines have never occurred within a democracy and states that give women the chance to earn their own livelihood are stronger than those that aren't. Sen perhaps does not devote enough time to the problems with democracy. Democracy cannot and should not be seen as a cure all that will bring wealth and prosperity to the common man. Authoritarian leaders throughout history have starved and brutalized their own people from Stalin, Hitler, Mao, and others. Economic growth may be higher in authoritarian regimes, but that's with tight state controls without the controls the economy plummets and you still have a tired mass of people who may lose jobs. Democracy may be a preferred solution, but I question how realistic such an idea is, considering that democracy requires a preparation period and a democratic willingness from the elites and populace. Without this, democratic efforts will fail. Sen does a decent job of building a case for democracy and freedom, but I question the realism of the idea.

Nadell has done what would seem undoable: she has turned the diverse life stories of dozens of women across centuries of time into a mesmerizing whole. This is a book to read and reread, then sit back and contemplate, with a smile, the wondrous achievements of Jewish women in America.” - Francine Klagsbrun, author of Lioness: Golda Meir and the Nation of Israel“Authoritative, comprehensive, and readable, this long-awaited book by one of the field’s premier scholars is destined to become an instant classic. It takes its place as the definitive history of Jewish women in America.” - Jonathan D. Sarna, university professor and Joseph H. and Belle R. Braun Professor of American Jewish History, Brandeis University, and author of American Judaism: A History“No one is more suited to analyze the profound changes in the position and status of American Jewish woman than Pamela S. Nadell. With an expansive knowledge of both American Jewish history and women’s history, she brings to this book unparalleled insights. This book is a great read that is both informative and highly engaging.” - Deborah E. Lipstadt, author of Antisemitism: Here and Now“From the justifiably famous to the undeservedly obscure, three centuries' worth of American Jewish women come to vibrant, edifying life in the pages of Pamela Nadell’s book. This is not a collection of biographies, but rather a seamlessly arranged narrative of the intersection of gender, religion, identity, immigration, and assimilation. It is essential reading for anyone who seeks a fully inclusive sense of American Jewish history.” - Samuel Freedman, author of Jew v. Jew
