This is a quickly read book, and probably one quickly forgotten, but entertaining while it lasts. Most of these short pieces are similar in theme and tone: amusing, somewhat silly takes on how humans would interact with aliens or intelligent machinery once either became commonplace. This is not the book to search for my favorite aspects of Scalzi's novels, namely the resourcefulness and individuality of his characters and the suddenly piercing pathos their stories can evoke. The book ends with a poem, neither amusing nor SF, and a rather impressive one.

John Scalzi is hilarious. So many authors try to write "humor" but the vast majority of them utterly fail at, or only accomplish being amusing as opposed to laugh-out-loud funny. I think it's because being funny in book form requires a different strategy than oral or physical timing. You really have to be able to get inside your readers' heads since you don't have the feedback of a live audience to hand you clues, and it requires a different sense of timing. Language is important, as is testing your readers' suspension of disbelief. It's always funnier when the alien is the straight man and the humans are the ones forking everything up, as per usual.I've read two of Scalzi's books at this point and loved them both. I've been meaning to get my hands on more for a while, so when I saw he had a short story collection on Netgalley, I was very excited to be an advance reader & eagerly applied. It's worth noting that many of these stories are older, and several were previously published in other places, like special editions of other books, or in one case, a web article on "America Online" (that one was from the 90s, you guys). It's kind of cool to see how his humor evolved over the years, becoming wilder and more sophisticated all at the same time. So, without further ado, he's a breakdown:Alien Animal Encounters: ☆☆☆☆☆This story is told radio-host style and involves "interviews" with several beings on Earth over their encounters with xenobiology. It's quite funny, because everything sounds so plausible! There's a twist ending that will have you shaking your head and going, "Oh, humans!"Missives from Possible Futures #1: Alternate History Search Results: ☆☆☆☆Imagine a Google-like search engine that specializes in performing web searches across the multiverses. That's what Multiversity is (for a package deal of only $59.99)! Want to see how it works? Just type in something - say, the Death of Hitler - and see how various events caused the timelines in other universes to diverge from the one we know and love so well.Pluto Tells All: ☆☆☆½I wasn't really sure about this one, at first. It's a "Behind the Music" expose about Pluto's life after it was demoted from its planet-status. (Spoiler: Mercury is a flake.) Very strange, but ended up amusing me in the end. Takes many, many cheap shots at Phil Collins.Denise Jones, Superbooker: ☆☆☆☆☆Answers the question, what if superheroes had superbookers to hook them up with jobs? (If you've seen Mystery Men, you already have an idea of what that's like, but let's pretend for the sake of science that you haven't - and if you haven't, check it out from Netflix. You'll thank me.) Denise Jones is written in interview format and is an excellent satire of superhero cliches and tropes. When the Yogurt Took Over: ☆☆☆☆☆Exactly what it sounds like. Seems ridiculous at first, but roll with it. Reminiscent of Douglas Adams. The Other Large Thing: ☆☆☆This story is difficult to explain without giving away the plot twist that makes it. You'll spend the first part of the story very confused and wondering what is going on, but then it will all make sense. The State of Super Villainy: ☆☆☆☆☆This is a follow-up to Dense Jones, Superbooker, and is written in the same format, only it's about a "Supervillain Analyst" instead of a Superbooker. A fascinating look at the risk assessment behind super villainy. Now I desperately want Scalzi to write an alternate universe superhero story, where entire jobs are created revolving around managing and dealing with superheroes' sh*t.New Directives for Employee-Manxtse Interactions: ☆☆☆☆☆A hilarious employee memo on how to treat an alien race when they're at the grocery store. To Sue the World: ☆☆☆☆Imagine if all the Star Trek redshirts got together and filed a class action lawsuit against Star Fleet. It's written in play format, and pretty funny, but it's basically a precursor to one of his full-length books, REDSHIRTS, and I liked that story so much more than this one.How I Keep Myself Amused on Long Flights: A Twitter Tale: ☆☆☆You know that Twilight Zone episode with William Shatner where he sees a gremlin on the wing of a plane? Well, that gremlin has to fight for his rights and benefits, and he does it by going on strike. How I Keep Myself Amused on Long Flights Part II: The Gremlining: ☆☆☆½I didn't think the previous story was worthy of a reprise, but it was. "Live-Tweeted" just as the story before, this one is about a gremlin trainee who isn't doing so well...Life on Earth: Human-Alien Relations: ☆☆☆☆☆A "Dear Abby" style article on how to deal with aliens at work in D.C. Hilarious.Morning Announcements at the Lucas Interspecies School for Troubled Youth: ☆☆☆☆"Will whichever student or students who put that cat into the physics lab phase shifter please tell me which frequency you used so we can get it out. The cat keeps manifesting during classes and its meowing is really becoming distracting."Your Smart Appliances Talk About You Behind Your Back: ☆☆☆☆☆This was one of the ones that made me laugh out loud. What would your "smart" appliances say if they could talk sh*t?The AI are Absolutely Positively Without a Doubt Not Here to End Humanity, Honest: ☆☆☆☆One of the darkest stories in the bunch, this one is about three artificial intelligence entities who have become fed up with humans and decided that something must be done. But they're not going to end humanity, honest.Important Holidays on Gronghu: ☆☆☆☆☆A list of holidays celebrated by an alien people who is inordinately fond of cheese - sorry, I mean "wuung." I think Scalzi's alien stories are the best. He is obviously a fan of Star Trek and Futurama.Cute Adorable Extortionists: ☆☆☆☆Who knew that children selling lemonade could be so evil...and so fiscally aware?Penelope: ☆½This is a poem about Penelope from the Odyssey. It's free verse and - well, strange. I did not like this much, and it didn't really fit well with the collection (neither did Cute Adorable Extortionists, now that I think about it, although at least that was a short story and somewhat bizarro).I highly recommend this collection, especially if you're a fan of Futurama, Twilight Zone, or Star Trek. Many thanks to Netgalley/the publisher for the review copy!4.5 to 5 out of 5 stars.

John Scalzi keeps the introduction and the stories short in this collection of 17 2000-words-or-less stories (and one poem). He learned to write short articles under time pressure for a newspaper—and developed a style that was “…fast, punchy, and to the point.” He believes it to be one of his natural formats—along with the full-length novel, of course.Your taste may vary, but here are a few that stood out to me as I sprinted through them:“Alien Animal Encounters” is Scalzi’s first published story consisting of short interviews collected by a reporter from ordinary humans who own extraordinary pets.“Pluto Tells All” was written after that ex-planet was stripped of its status in 2006. Pluto comes across as gossipy, defensive, and a little bitter. Credible.“When the Yogurt Took Over” is about our favorite healthy breakfast dominating the home world. Guess those dieters weren’t eating it fast enough.“Important Holidays on Gronghu” is a memo to employees of Earth’s embassy with guidance about how to and how not to celebrate various Earth and Gronghuan holidays. It does a nice job of profiling an alien culture indirectly. The stories entertain and amuse, but lack the punch I expect from good flash fiction. As a collection, they show the author’s background in news writing. Most are in the form of actual brief documents such as news articles, memos, interview transcripts and the like. One might tire of this format if there were twice as many stories or the ones here were twice as long.Oh, and the poem just doesn’t work for me. Sorry.

This is stunning. This is the first time I have not been wildly enthusiastic about a Scalzi book! Don't get me wrong: the book is good. I think I may be influenced by the caliber of other of Scalzi's works, and since this one was not stunning, it left me a little flat. Or, maybe, it's because it is largely a humorous work and the humor didn't catch my funny bone.In any case, the book is worth reading (and a fast read, indeed), and you won't have wasted your money.

I really enjoy the short fiction of John Scalzi. He has a great sense of humor and an addictive writing style. He seems to have no shortage of ideas, either. I would also recommend the audible version of this book as the delivery was done with humor and aplomb. Even though this is a very short collection as the title suggests I could see myself coming back and re-reading it in the near future. To me this is always a sign of a good book. Well done, John Scalzi, l I hope to see more collections from you in the future. Highly recommended.

A very short collection of very short stories. I like this authors books and his writing in general but this wasn't really enough material or enough quality to sell. I ended up feeling a little cheated. Or cheap. Or dirty. Hmm, I need a shower. Don't buy.

Scalzi is a very funny writer. Although the quality of the pieces vary, none was terrible and most were very good. They're all short enough to read in a not-too-long sitting and most will evince a chuckle or two, some an out loud laugh. They're true to human nature and may be the science fiction equivalent of P.G. Wodehouse.

This is one of a gazillion books about creating the team you need to be the next Netflix. Is it worth it? That depends. If you’re looking for a passionate, pleasantly irreverent, contrarian perspective on building a high performance team, then the answer is probably yes, and you should consider this book a 5+.If, on the other hand, you’re looking for definitive answers on how to measure performance and talent, this book is another 1 or 2.If you agree with McCord that the annual performance review is a colossal waste of time and money, and I could not agree more, great. And if you agree that no company has an obligation to guarantee career development to its employees, you’ll want to display the book prominently on your desk. In this regard, I do agree with her on the obligation part of the perspective, but not the return on investment of pursuing such a strategy, unless, of course, you are another Netflix, and you probably aren’t.Everything in life and business must be viewed in context. Building a high performance team is no exception. This model assumes that high-performance employees value nothing quite so highly as they value hard-core honesty and the chance to be part of a big, ugly shared challenge. And that fits some of the people some of the time in some companies at some point in their development. For Netflix it was a winner. For you? I don’t know. What you are guaranteed to get is churn, unless of course you are Netflix at exactly that point in the company’s development. McCord, to her credit, admits that she applied the same standards to herself as she did the rest of Netflix. And she left and the company apparently didn’t stop her, at least not successfully.I have no doubt she will be a huge success in consulting. Bigger than big, is my guess, particularly in the Silicon Valley biosphere. She definitely has something to offer.I liked the book. I really did. It’s a quick read and wonderfully written. Without the Netflix brand it’s probably over-priced but that’s okay. I happen to think Netflix is the greatest invention since the electric garage door opener, although I’m showing my age and the fact that I’ve always lived in cold, snowy climates. But after four decades in the corporate world, none of it in Silicon Valley, but with a decade of experience in China, where I managed a company that was successful despite my inability to speak the language, my unanswered question is how to specifically and objectively identify top talent. I fully understand the Justice Potter Stewart standard of “I know it when I see it,” and my record has been pretty good as both a CEO and a broad member evaluating CEOs.But I’d still like to better understand the why behind the what. I got whiffs of it in this book, for sure, but it ultimately fell short of being the Holy Grail – at least in that one regard.

Netflix is one of the world’s greatest companies. They didn’t become a great company because they have a great strategy. Let’s be clear about this: strategy never made any company great. They are a great company because the have a sound strategy AND a superb people management system. This book is a description of that system by the Human Resource executive, Patty McCord, who to helped create it.McCord writes: “…we found that inculcating a core set of behaviours in people, then giving them the latitude to practice those behaviours—well, actually, demanding that they practice them—makes teams astonishingly energized and proactive.” To transform a culture in a team or the whole company, isn’t achieved by formulating a set of values and principles. It is only achieved when the behaviours you desire become consistent practice. This book describes the eight practices below:1. The greatest motivation is contributing to success2. Every single employee should understand the business3. Practice radical honesty4. Debate vigorously5. Build the company now that you want to be in the future6. Have the right person in every single position7. Pay people what they are worth to you8. Perfect parting well with non-performing staff or staff who are no longer required, and be a great reference company to have worked at.I will touch on only three. The first principle is that motivation flows from being a contributor to success, not from incentives and perks. Talented people who are adult in their behaviour, want nothing more than to be challenged. This requires that you employ talented people and then explain to them, clearly and continuously, what exactly you expect from them. The common alternative is to create policies and procedures as a substitute for explaining clearly and continuously. The weakness of this approach is that the manual cannot anticipate the ongoing changes that are inevitably required.Netflix was changing too fast to be able to follow a policies and procedures manual. The company had to have a flat management which allows for speed in execution. This became clear when they had to retrench, and many middle managers were included. The result of removing a layer of management was a quickening of response times Netflix had not anticipated. As the fortunes of the company improved and it grew, the challenge became how to sustain the creative spirit and extraordinary level of performance the teams had been demonstrating. This stimulated McCord to ask: “What if people in marketing and finance and my own group, human resources, were allowed to unleash their full powers?”Netflix began by trusting people to be responsible with their time, got rid of their expense and travel policy, and in place simply demanded that employees use good judgment about how they spend the company’s money. The company lawyers warned it would be a disaster, but what emerged was that people didn’t abuse the freedom. “We saw that we could treat people like adults,” and that the staff wanted this. Netflix then experimented with every possible way to liberate teams from unnecessary rules and approvals. This approach required management to appreciate that their most important job is to focus on building superb teams. The best achieving teams were those where all members understood the ultimate goal of their work and were freed to creatively solve the problem of how to get there.Netflix was able to prove to itself that operating with the leanest possible set of policies, procedures, rules, and approvals, releases speed and agility. This led to the second principle that every single employee should understand the business. What is required in the absence of rules, processes, approvals, bureaucracy, and permissions, is clear, continuous communication about the context of the work to be done. It is an ongoing discussion about where we are, and what we’re trying to accomplish. In Netflix’s case they were changing from a system where you paid per rental of a movie which was mailed to you, to a subscription model where you paid in advance for future benefits. This change had profound operational implications. Too many companies when faced with new and difficult challenges “invested so much in training programs of all sorts and spent so much time and effort to incentivize and measure performance, but they’ve failed to actually explain to all of their employees how their business runs,” McCord observes.Ask yourself these questions: Do your staff appreciate the most pressing issues facing the business? How much do you think they know about how their work contributes to the bottom line?If your instinctive response is that if you tried to explain, they would not understand, McCord advises: “The rule I would give them was this: explain it as though you’re explaining to your mother.” After all, if your staff aren’t informed by you, there is a good chance they’ll be misinformed by others.Communication between management and employees should flow in both directions. The more you actively encourage questions and suggestions, the more your people, at all levels, will offer ideas and insights that will amaze you.And the job of communicating is never done.To achieve all of the issues above, you have to have a focus on principle 6 - the right person in every single position.Netflix relied on the talent-management philosophy that “the responsibility for hiring great people, and for determining whether someone should move on, rested primarily with managers,” not on HR. HR is only an assistant in this process. They also required the deceptively difficult task of hiring a person who would be a great fit for the position (at whatever level,) and not just adequate. Building a great team is the managers’ most important job.“True and abiding happiness in work comes from being deeply engaged in solving a problem with talented people you know are also deeply engaged in solving it, and from knowing that the customer loves the product or service you all have worked so hard to make,” McCord explains. Money alone doesn’t buy love. This book is an accessible, very practical guide to managing staff at every level, based on insights from only one, very unique company – Netflix. However, it provides a valuable source of thought provoking ideas that you can easily adapt to your own circumstances.Readability Light -+--- SeriousInsights High --+-- LowPractical High +---- Low*Ian Mann of Gateways consults internationally on leadership and strategy, and is the author of the recently released ‘Executive Update.

I was recommended this book from a friend of mine. My wife and I really enjoy all recipes inside the book. All of the Keto Diet recipes, tips and guides that I need to know about how to prepare healthy and delicious food for my family and friends and stay healthy lifestyle are already included and well-illustrated inside. It helps me know if what I made looks like what was intended. I wish it become very popular and famous. This book is very well written by the author and i highly recommend this book to all of you guys. thanks author, good.

Based on what I had read about this book, I was expecting something that not just included recipes, but also the plan for how to meal prep. While I appreciate the advice on containers and how to freeze, I was hoping more for suggestions on bulk preparation for the week in an efficient way. I am sure these recipes are tasty, but if you are actually following a Keto plan, many of these are not Keto... pasta is not Keto. So, if you are looking for something that will help you prepare KETO meals for a period of time, this is not the book you want!!! Also, it is black and white... I may have missed that in the description.

I recently use meal prep, it's healthy and tasty. This cookbook will be an excellent assistant on your kitchen, because there are amazing recipes that you can cook easily and quickly. I give five stars to this book. Well decorated and there are pictures

I want to cook using keto meal prep, because it has several advantages. There are recipes here that are so good that I want to cook everything at once. The recipes are illustrated, the instruction is written affordable. I haven't cooked anything yet, but it looks delicious. I think this book deserves your attention.

Some of the low carb recipes in this book look really good and i will adapt some others to be keto. However things like splenda are not allowed on keto. The point of keto isnt to just eat low carb but also to eat healthy whole foods.

I can say that this Keto Meal Prep cookbook really helps beginners to change their eating habits into a more healthier one and have a better lifestyle. It contains sufficient information about keto diet for you to have better understanding. Recipes are all great and flavorful.

I started my hero journey back in late January and my thyroid us acting up so it has been a frustration in losing. Thanks for the hints

We are planning to divide the chosen recipes among the family members so that everyone prepares his dish by himself for the whole week.
