About the Author
MASATOSHI NAKAYAMA carries on the tradition of his teacher, Gichin Funakoshl, the Father of Modern Karate. Long professor and director of physical education at Takushoku University, his alma mater (1937), he was chief instructor of the Japan Karate Association from 1955 until his death in 1987. A ninth degree black belt and a familiar face at tournaments, he was among the first to send instructors overseas and to encourage the development of karate along scientific lines.

I have been a lifetime student of the numerous Martial Art systems with Shotokan Karate being one of them. The "Best Karate" series by Masatoshi Nakayama are nothing short of fantastic for those who desire to advance in Shotokan Karate. This volume deals with how to perform the Black Belt katas of Jutte, Hangetsu and Empi. These kata are required to be promoted to ranks higher than Shodan (1st degree black belt) level. In this respect they are considered somewhat advanced because of the various techniques, stances and jumping movements.This volume provides essential details on how to perform each specific movement of these kata. The photographs are clear and easy to understand; however, you must be aware that attempting to learn Shotokan Kata by merely reading the book and looking at the photographs is not enough.
