This book was such a misogynistic piece of trash that I couldn't even finish reading it. The gist of the book is that in order to possibly get and keep a man, a woman has to continuously tell him he's the greatest thing ever, financially he's got nothing on Bill Gates, and have sex with him - with or without benefit of marriage even though Harvey claims to be a Christian - any time he wants. But there are still no guarantees that "your" man is not going to cheat on you because, according to the book, sex is nothing but a physical act for men and there's no emotion connected to it whatsoever. Don't give "the cookie," as Harvey adolescently refers to sex, for more than 90 days and your man WILL cheat on you. If this is what it takes to get or keep a man, I'd rather be alone! Good grief, all that work just to have some egomaniacal sex addict around the house for you to wait on hand and foot - no thanks. After almost 60 years on this planet, I don't hold a very high opinion of most men in general, but Mr. Harvey's opinion of his own sex comes across as even lower than mine.

I don't know if I have ever left a review for this. I was not a big Steve Harvey fan. At 24 I had a deep depression relationship wise. All of my encounters with men were all the way wrong. I wanted a relationship, had great male friendships, but couldn't get the relationship I wanted. I was too afraid of setting the standard I wanted. Reading a series of books on self help, this was the most helpful. It was the father and daughter talk I needed. I was able to understand that I needed to set a standard, ask the questions I want upfront, recognize the red flags, and put myself first. I absolutely love this book. I also check in with this book when dating new men just as a refresher. Regardless of what Steve's past maybe, he has truly shown me something's I never knew. thank you Mr. Harvey.P.S. If you are not ready for change, not ready to let go of the stuff weighing you down, and not ready to forgive and move on, this is not the book for you.

I really enjoyed this book after ending a very toxic, disappointing reconciliation with my ex-husband. This book opened my eyes to mistakes I made along the way and what I can do for the future. So many of the things the Harvey writes are spot-on. I appreciate the “checklists” and clear ways that he recommends a women ensure she’s not heading down the wrong path. I think others have mentioned some of the ideas seem antiquated but I have noticed that those things are still alive and well. It seems to depend on the person but by and large, what’s mentioned in the book is true. This book was recommended to me by a friend who said I would appreciate something funny, thought provoking, and challenging to my beliefs - she was right and I think you’ll enjoy it too.

As a 55 year old woman, wish had read decades before I did. As a therapist I gave this to many women. As a mom I just bought for my 19 year old, confident, talented, strong, daughter who can't understand men or why she might intimidate them. This book should be mandatory reading for ALL who date men, no matter sexual orientation. Sometimes it is hard to see the forest for the trees. Simple language that is very to the point and clear. Easy to read and gives rise to much thought on readers part. Like it or not, it is dead on the money.

This is Steve Harvey's take on men, not necessarily all men or even close to it. I like Steve Harvey, especially his book on 'Act Like a Success' so I thought I try this one. Hmm. Well. What a mistake. He seems to think he knows what all men want. Well I am a man and I want much different things. I think Steve is trying to be honest but he is giving his take on how he is with women and what he wants. I think his book includes a certain percentage of men, maybe 20-30%, maybe more. Who knows.For instance, in a relationship, true love is very important to me. I don't see this mentioned anywhere in his book, or anything about love for that matter. He's materialistic. He probably speaks for materialistic men. I mean, his current wife was an escort client of his for 20 years. lol. google it. I don't judge him. That's who he is. He says men want: loyalty, support, and the cookie from women. Sorry, I want true love, good/deep conversation, true friendship, emotional maturity, spiritual connection, trust, loyalty, outstanding sex, and someone who is fun to be around. So many other things in the book that is totally off on what men want.He seems to advocate the sugar daddy approach to women though he has a separate section on 'sugar daddy' which doesn't include himself. lol. For instance, he seem to think that if women give him loyalty, support, and the cookie, he will go outside and brave the battle for her and take care of her. Interesting. If that is not sugar daddy, I don't know what is. How about as a man, I want a woman who is RESPONSIBLE and can keep a job, and pay her own bills, instead of me fighting all her battles for her and taking care of her. I see marriage as a partnership. But I guess when you are rich as Steve, it doesn't matter. You can pay for everything. lol.Also I like to cuddle but Steve says men don't like to cuddle. I will drop a woman if she cannot get emotionally intimate with me. That is another requirement of mine but totally missed by Steve Harvey, who seem to imply that men only want sex in the bedroom. lol. I love kissing and foreplay.I do like Steve as a comedian and as a TV personality. He makes me laugh so hard. However he doesn't speak for me nor many of the men I know.

I'm still reading this. I bought this since I just met a new man. I wanted to see if this would help me out with him. He's shy and a bit old fashioned but a very kind person. This book helps me to learn how to relate to him in a better way. Because I've found that men do think differently than women. This book helps me embrace the differences we have. The book is an easy read, too. Kind of funny at times.

The book might even be good enough to provide original or helpful insights into the world that we live in.REVIEW:In his first book, Family Wealth, James E. Hughes Jr. first set out his belief that the goal of business families should be to enhance the human and intellectual capital of the family. While this same theme permeates throughout Family: The Compact..., Hughes' second book takes a much more round-about journey through the ideas and philosophies that contribute to the family dynamic and influence its success. While a great deal of the book contains a survey of philosophical, anthropological, and psychological ideas and how they relate to families in business and how such families can increase their likelihood of seven-generation success, there are some very important ideas that I picked up as I read. Below I'll set out some of the main themes of the book and some other valuable nuggets of wisdom that I took away from it.Hughes continually references the idea of 'seven-generation thinking' - viewing the family as an entity that will continue to thrive for seven generations - and maintains that families who adopt this mindset and seek to ensure the well-being of the family over the very long run will improve their odds of avoiding falling prey to the 'shirtsleeves-to-shirtsleeves in three generations' proverb.Another notion that Hughes discusses often is that of a 'family of affinity'. Hughes claims that families should be defined, not by blood only, but rather by certain bonds of affinity, and that excluding those who share those bonds because they don't share blood (think in-laws, spouses, etc.) fails to adopt the philosophy that a family should seek to enhance its human capital. While the issue of in-laws and non-blood family is often a tricky one to deal with in practice, and while Hughes doesn't offer many practical tips on how to deal with the tensions, jealousies and other difficulties that often arise in such situations, I would imagine that he would subscribe to the school of thought which holds that where a set of shared values exists among those individuals, any problems can be resolved. Not everyone needs to have the same goals, but shared values would be immensely influential in achieving a harmonious relationship.On the issue of individual goals, Hughes highlights one of the most difficult challenges faced by families in business, especially those of the second generation - how to prioritize the goals and dreams of the second generation when they are different from those of the first. Hughes states that family members must assist in the individuation and differentiation of the second generation, and help each member of that generation to achieve his or her own personal dream. In the long run, a family comprised of members that follow their own paths in life is likely to achieve greater happiness and success than a family comprised of individuals who are forced or coerced into roles and lives that they would otherwise not choose for themselves. Hughes also mentions that without the emergence of a new dream from the second generation, the first generation's dream is likely to fizzle out and the enterprise will suffer. His prescription for dealing with the 'new' dreams of the second generation is for the family leadership to recognize those dreams and the conflicts they may present and attempt to integrate those dreams into the family's vision. As he states, "Unless [the family] incorporates the aspirations of new generations, it cannot attract them."On the role of the family in the management and ownership of the business, Hughes observes that from his experience, most family businesses fail because of poor ownership, not poor management. Hughes introduces the role of 'steward-conservator' for members of the family, suggesting that all family members be engaged by the responsibility of ownership and creating the strategic vision for the company. Personally, I find Hughes' discussion of this issue somewhat unsatisfying. While I believe there is merit in what seems to underlie his view - that a family that engages all members is more likely to succeed over the long term - I wish there was more discussion of how to organize family governance structures in practice. For example, it's not clear whether Hughes means to suggest that as steward-conservators all family members should be active in setting the strategic vision of the company in the same way that a board of directors might be considered to set the strategic vision. If this is indeed his suggestion, then I respectfully disagree. In my opinion, deciding upon an appropriate strategy is not a simple task that should be entrusted to anyone merely on the basis of their family status. I am of the opinion that while family might be best intentioned, they are not always best able. Ultimately, I believe that ability (which is most often developed through education and experience) should dictate who is responsible for setting the strategic vision, since such a task demands sophisticated, analytical and engaged minds. Also it must be remembered that those who are best able to manage the business are not always the ones who are best able to set its strategic vision. All that being said, I do agree with the idea that all the family should be engaged with/by the business, but perhaps this is better achieved through a family council or assembly that engages the board of directors and re-affirms the family's shared set of values which serve as a framework within which the strategic vision must advance. I would be very interested in reading more about Hughes' clients and the various governance structures that were used, and the relative advantages and disadvantages of each.One last idea that I'll mention is that of the 'leader from behind'. Hughes references Lao Tzu's notion of the leader 'who is never seen, never heard, and never felt, but is revered for one thousand years by his followers for his excellent leadership' or more commonly described as the leaders who's followers say 'we did it ourselves.' Hughes states that this type of 'leader from behind' is the type of leader that is important in family businesses, especially in the second generation, because this type of leader can maintain a sever-generation outlook and encourage individual family members to follow their individual dreams, thereby enhancing the family as a whole.All-in-all, I found this to be another interesting book from Hughes, and although personally I wasn't a huge fan of the some of the extensive anthro, psych, philo discussions, that content definitely demonstrates the level of passion that Hughes has for the subject matter and the depths to which his life's journey has taken him in search for the many bits of wisdom that might help families avoid the 'shirtsleeves-to-shirtsleeves' proverb.

With the increase in financially comfortable, well-to-do, and extremely wealthy families has come a need for literature which prepares heirs to meet the financial, human, and intellectual challenges they face as they work to develop successful, long-lasting families and legacies. Most such families are aware of and want to overcome the well-known "shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in three generations" syndrome: from broke to broke or from little to little in three generations as family cohesivesness and motivation wane.While much of the current literature on family success and legacy focuses on financial aspects, James E. Hughes concentrates on the human and intellectual issues of successful families, though he does not ignore financial concerns. Not does he limit his advice to the wealthy; all families who want to prepare their future members to develop successful legacies could find much of value in his writings.His previous book, "Family Wealth: Keeping it in the Family," offered guidelines for conserving family assets by delineating practices, principles, and the roles of experts who can assist with these tasks, concentrating on the jobs of family members as they attempt to develop a cohesive structure for family preservation and legacy.This book, "Family: The Compact Among Generations," continues this discussion, but emphasizes designs and schema for family educational programs that help family leaders direct succeeding leaders and generations in their tasks. He believes that the successful family works to help family members fulfill their dreams, visions, goals, and hearts' desires as a means of enriching the expanding family and increasing its worth. He urges members to set up structures that allow this to happen. These suggestions are as specific as providing lists of psychological tests that help family members identify their hearts' desires through determining their intellectual, learning, problem-solving, work, and personality styles. The suggestions are also general enough to suggest different curricula and formats to help the various generations meet their challenges and jobs without restricting their growth.Hughes is especially helpful to the second generation as it meets its obligations and solves its particular dilemma: keeping alive the dreams of the first generation without slighting their own dreams and aspirations.However, Hughes is no Pollyanna-ish softy. He knows that any educational program, no matter how carefully constructed, will never result in all family members happily meeting their potential and increasing family worth without manipulative, dominating, destructive, or self-aggrandizing types showing up. He writes about how to work with these members, too.Most of the book provides clear, precise, easily read discussions of how to encourage successful family development and long-lasting success using the advice and research of historians, spiritual leaders, psychologists, and other experts on family affairs. This is a very interesting book. Saroo Breirley at age 5 mistakenly gets aboard a train andtravels far from home. He was totally lost. At age 5 he did not even know the name of his village, therefore he wandered the streets of Calcutta, homeless and alone for many weeks.Finally, he was placed in an institution from which he was adopted. He was reared by a loving couple who lived in Tasmania. As an adult he researched for years to locate his village. He remembered a road, a train station, and a water tank. Due to the tech age he was ableto find the village using Google Earth satellite . After 25 years Saroo isreunited with his family. His family had been and were still poor. In the years since they were united Saroo has been able to help them. He has returnedto India several times. This story received lots of press coverage and evena special on 60 minutes. Saroo writes well and tells his story with great skill.

As a lover of a good story, I give this short but powerful book a solid five stars. As a mother, there aren't enough stars available.to express my admiration for the way Brierley processed and portrayed his relationship with his two families. He honored and loved them both, and regardless of which mother I might have been in this circumstance, my heart would be full, and I would not have felt shortchanged.

This book tells an amazing story. There is simply no other way to describe it. It is the real-life story of Saroo, a five-year-old child in a village in central India, who gets lost and finds himself transported all the way east to Calcutta, some 1800 kms away. Young Saroo, all of five, penniless and illiterate, does not even know the name of his village and knows little else about where he was from. He gets off at the bustling, crowded Howrah train station and survives for six weeks in the intimidating bad and mean streets of Calcutta by his instincts and luck. He ends up at a benevolent orphanage called ISSA, where the kindly Ms.Saroj Sood - tries to find his family and re-unite him. But all Saroo can tell was that he was from Ginestlay, which is what he remembered as his village's name. He also mistakenly says that he travelled just overnight by train when in reality he had travelled almost 24 hours to get to Calcutta. After a couple of moths' futile effort, Mrs.Sood pronounces him 'lost' and organizes him to be adopted by Sue and John Brierley, a young couple from Tasmania, Australia.Saroo is lovingly brought up by the Brierleys and he grows up into a happy and well-integrated Aussie over the next 20 years. However Saroo always wonders about his origins, with clear memories of his birth mother Kamala, his kid sister Shekila and elder brothers Kallu and Guddu, whom he looked up to as a child two decades before. He starts working on trying to find where he was from by using the feeble memories of his childhood. All he had to go by was that there was a train station whose name was something like 'Berampur' , that it had a water tower, an overpass across the tracks and that the town had a fountain near a cinema. His village 'Ginestlay' was somewhere nearby and that they were all reachable overnight by train from Calcutta. Gradually, over five years, with incredible patience and perseverance , Saroo, at age 30, using Google Earth's satellite images and Facebook, miraculously locates the train station with the identifying features of his childhood. He notes that a nearby town is called Khandwa and that there is a Facebook group belonging to people from Khandwa. He contacts them and gets the key info that there is a nearby village called Ganesh Talai - the 'Ginestlay' of 5-year-old Saroo! Saroo soon goes to India and reconnects with his birth family to the great delight of his elderly mother Kamala and his siblings Shekila and Kallu, who are now married with children. Sadly, Guddu, his eldest brother whom he adored as a child, was killed in an accident just on the same day that Saroo got lost 25 years before. Otherwise, it is a happy resolution for Saroo.Not only Saroo, but his Aussie parents, Sue and John as well, come off as wonderful, loving and caring parents and individuals. Sue herself was a WWII refugee from Hungary and her story is also inspring as told it in the book. Saroo's birth mother Kamala is another remarkable woman, who never gave up hope that her son Sheru (which is his correct name!) would return one day. Hence she never moved from the shack where she lived so that she will be there when Saroo comes back! The other heroes in the book are the internet, Google Earth and Facebook! It is a great tribute to these wonderful technologies which make it possible for the adult Saroo to sit ten thousand miles away in Hobart, Australia and exactly locate the water tower and overpass of his childhood memory and find out the correct name of his village. Let no one denounce technology again!I found the book moving, inspirational and one of hope and the indomitable spirit of the humankind. It is a story of triumph against great odds. Going through the early chapters where Saroo survives for six weeks as a five-year-old in Calcutta, I had palpitations as I felt anxious that nothing terrible should befall young Saroo! The book also has a special appeal for me since I grew up in India and lived for 13 years in wonderful Australia.

Everyone can benefit from going on this amazing journey with a young man who exhibits tenacity, resolve and grace in his search for his birth family and his devotion to both his adopted and birth families.

I'm not giving much away by quoting a stranger the author met as a grown-up on his mission to find the family he lost at age 5. Finding his former home unoccupied and having no idea where to look next, he encountered a man who said to him, "Wait here. I will take you to your mother."At age 5, Saroo Brierley fell asleep on a train in India and couldn't find his way home. By luck he was placed in an orphanage and adopted by an Australian couple. He spent years combing his memory of places and landmarks in India, tracing them on Google Earth from his home in Australia, and finally solving the mysteries of how he got lost, traveling back to India, and finding his way home. As the title says, "ALong Way Home."This may be the most fascinating book I ever read. I couldn't put it down, even though I myself have never been to India or Australia. It is an amazing story.

It's both a heartbreaking and heartwarming story.When 5-year-old Saroo is accidentally separated from his Indian family at a train station, he ends up surviving on the streets of Kolkata (Calcutta) on his own for 2-3 weeks before being taken to an orphanage. He's quickly adopted by an Australian family, John and Sue Brierley.Fast-forward 25 years, and Saroo chooses to search for his biological family, which he does with the help of Google Maps, Google Earth and Facebook. In a country of almost 1.3 billion people, he manages to find the three he cares most about.It's an inspiring story, and one I devoured quickly. My heart broke as he describe the poverty of India, and I cried as he described his adoptive mother and birth mother meeting and embracing for the first time.The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because I feel the writing was bland at times, and some details are repeated over and over again. However, I credit that to Brierly being a first-time writer, and let's be honest—sharing your life's story, especially one as unique as his, can't be an easy task. All in all, I'd recommend the book to anyone.

I wanted to read this before seeing the movie - very interesting and tugs on your heartstrings to hear how difficult life is for so many. How the author finds his family is truly amazing.
