What a wonderful and refreshing book. Two friends who are incredibly different in outlook about life but love each other all the same. I had other people read this book and they could see themselves in the two sloths. There are many layers to the book. Readable by little children for the fun of it and for adults for the many underlying messages. I have read it a number of times and am encouraged by it every time while also enjoying the fun graphics and the unique personalities of Peter and Ernesto.

It's light-heartened and fun but still portrays realistic characters. The art is engaging and simple enough for anyone who can read to follow, but still full of character. I passed it along to my nephews after reading it since it definitely seems like their jam. I think it does a great job of showing different types of people (animals) and that adventure means something different to everyone.

More of a comic like book for older kids. I’m sure in the future this will pay off

A modern-day Burt and Ernie, Peter and Ernesto's tale of adventure, non-adventure, and friendship is silly and even, at times, poignant.

I've always loved Graham's work and Peter & Ernesto did not disappoint. I can't wait to see more of these sloths. The story was great as well! Well done!

To quote the wise words of MC Scat Kat, “opposites attract”. Particularly when those opposites are best buddies. The idea of the carefree soul, untethered by earthly woes, paired with a perpetually concerned best friend, is a staple in all possible forms of entertainment. Children’s literature is no exception. At its best this kind of pairing will introduce us to characters like “Frog and Toad”. But Lobel, for all his charms, set a pretty high bar with that book. How likely is it that lightning of this sort could strike twice? Well, I’m not going to tell you that “Peter & Ernesto” is the next Frog and Toad or anything quite like that. For one thing, it’s a graphic novel, not a series of easy books containing short chapters. For another, it’s a single story, not a bunch of little ones. But if you’re looking for that same level of friendship, compassion, and bite-sized adventuring, I don’t think you’d be kooky to check out the latest from Graham Annable. Who knew sloths had so much pep?Why are sloths so slow? Because they’re content, of course. Peter is anyway. He’s got his favorite tree. He’s got his favorite activity (figuring out shapes in different clouds). He’s got his singing talent. And he has his best friend Ernesto. That is, he HAD his best friend Ernesto. The trouble is that Ernesto isn’t as content with his lot in life as Peter. It’s not enough for him that he gets to see one little patch of sky. He wants to travel all over the world to find other patches of sky, over deserts and mountains and water and ice. So Ernesto takes off, leaving a gutted Peter behind. Now Peter is determined to find his friend and to take him home. But will Ernesto even want to return? And, more importantly, how is Peter going to find him at all?When I read the book I was enthralled, but now that I’ve managed to produce two small literary critics I figured I should try it out on them before taking a crack at a review. My 7-year-old daughter listened faithfully, as did my 4-year-old boy. When it was done they were thoughtful. Then my daughter remarked, “It’s not very funny, is it?” It was an interesting point, actually. There’s humor in it, certainly, but it’s not a gag-forward telling. Mr. Annable isn’t going for slapstick comedy or big goofy moments. There was one moment that I caught my kids off-guard and made them laugh, and that was when the monkeys were going about calling for their friend Dave. “Dave” is an inherently funny name. The Minions movies figured this out long ago, and this book does to. Something about the single syllable nature of it, I think. At any rate, I wouldn’t peg this book as a laugh-a-minute gigglefest, but there’s a quiet, understated humor to it that’s really going to appeal to the kid that just wants a good story with expressive, interesting characters.Here. Come with me now. I want to show you the exact moment I fell in love with this book. It’ll only take a second. Have a seat. Comfy? Okay, so let’s look at the two-page spread that goes over pages four and five. Mr. Annable, knowing as he did that he only had 119 pages to work with, makes quick work of setting the plot it motion right at the story’s start. Fair enough, but because he knows what he is doing he actually manages to show, rather than tell, when a character is having a change of heart. On these two pages our hero sloths are admiring various cloud formations. Overcome with the beauty of the moment, Peter bursts into song about how nothing ever changes and nothing ever will. He seems really juiced by this realization. Ernesto, meanwhile, is having a sudden dark night of the soul. All you really need to do here is watch his eyes. He goes from easygoing contentment to slow, dawning sorrow. With just the slightest of lines under one eye and pupils that shift downward in thought, the artist has created an inciting incident that’s entirely internal, but also obvious to any reader less oblivious than Peter.I think, in my old age, I’ve decided that it isn’t as important that a child reader find a character likable as it is that they find them relatable. And for many, I believe that Ernesto will be the sloth kids aspire to be while Peter is the sloth they identify with most closely. It stands to reason. Peter loves familiarity and routine. So do kids (younger ones anyway). But as children age they become more like Ernesto, eager to see the world and find their place in it. Maybe that’s the secret to this kind of buddy pairing. It’s the two sides of childhood. The first part that longs for safety and stability and the second part that just wants to get away.Graham Annable. Graham . . . Graham Annable. Shoot. How the heck do I know that name? It was driving me crazy for a while. It wasn’t because I knew his adult books like “Stickleback” or “The Book of Grickle”. But as I may have mentioned, there’s that way he draws eyes. It’s like nothing else I’d ever seen. That’s when it struck me. Eyes, eh? And this is a book from First Second? It only took me a moment to rush over and check my copy of “Fairy Tale Comics: Classic Tales Told by Extraordinary Comics” published in 2013. A quick check inside and lo and behold I was right. About five years ago Mr. Annable was last seen illustrating a wordless telling of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. In that tale the bears are almost entirely eyes. Eyes that, to the infinite amusement of my children, don’t really change expression much in the course of the tale. He’s worked primarily in the world of adult comics, so I hope “Peter & Ernesto” is a sign of further things to come in the kid sphere.If I were to compare “Peter & Ernesto”’s style to any other series or artist, the closest I’d come up with would be Sara Varon. Books like “Robot Dreams” and the more recent “New Shoes” sport the same easygoing vibe as Annable’s. These are graphic novels for those kids that don’t need big action set pieces, bloody battles, or robot wars to retain their interest. If the children’s comic world was like the movie world, “Peter & Ernesto” would below in the indie film category. It’s quiet and touching. A story of friendship and finding what it is that you love in this world, even as you continue to love what you’ve left behind. Sweet and honest, with a magnificent ability to show rather than tell, “Peter & Ernesto”’s first adventure is just the right speed for just the right reader. Find it and hand it over to that kid today.For ages 5-10

This is quite a cookbook. Just about everything a cook could want in one place. The Toll House Cookies are just the beginning. If you like cooking this is a great place to start and there are instructions for Pressure Cookers too!

This is the classic cookbook based on the recipes served at The Toll House restaurant, from the inventor of the chocolate chip cookie. That recipe (for Toll House Chocolate Crunch Cookies) is included here, and has a slightly different technique than that on the back of the Nestle package, which improves the texture of the cookie.This is a small, all purpose cookbook, of the Joy of Cooking variety. There is an extensive section on kitchen hints and menu planning in the beginning of the book. The recipes cover the full range from appetizers to jams and jellies. These are pretty close to fool-proof, though obviously from a different era.If you're into food history it is worth picking up a copy. It is a stand alone book, but it is frozen in time as well. Even more fascinating is the full cookbook these recipes are from, which is long out of print. This is a fine substitute, though.

I thought it would be interesting to have a book from the inventer of the origional toll house cookies. It is not just desserts for those of you who are not that interested in baking. I know many people hear toll house and think Neslie products and chocolate, actually, I think Neslie was one of her bakers back then.I found the recipes to be nice and simple, as it calls for mostly inexpensive common ingredients that could be found in grocery stores. That's what shows you its not what you spend that makes a recipe good necessarly, as long as you use good natural ingredients. I know some reviewers said they use lower fat substitutes, which is understandable, but I usually like to follow the recipes just as they are and serve them in moderation. Most of them do not have an execesive amount of fat when eaten in small portions, as long as you go easy on the sweets. Just remember it is an old book, so some names of things have changed. For example, when it calls baking soda, it says soda. When it says shortening, it in fact means any type of fat including butter, which I was glad to read because I like the flavore of butter in certain things. Additioanlly, when it says sour milk, I use butter milk which is pretty much the same thing, however she does tell you how to turn regular milk into sour milk. (just know that it does not mean spoiled milk). Additioally, I do not think you have to sift all purpose flour anymore unless it says sift after measuring, as now flour is sifted but it cannot hurt to do so. I noticed another reviewer said they used the technique in this book for making the famous toll house chocolate chip cookies (called chocolate crunch.) I noticed the ingredients is the same but she had a little bit of a different mixing method, which I have to try sometime, although I suppose the change could have to do with the different processing method of ingredients.Oh and some of her dessert recipes call for pastry flour, which is kind of expensive today and you might have to go to a special store. However, I have made my own pastry flour by combining 1 and 1/3 cups of all purpose flour and 2/3 a cup of cake flour and had good results. You could probably even just use cake flour, as I think they just didn't make cake flour back then. King Aurthor's cake flour I believe is more similar to pastry flour as it is not chemically altered.Remember though this is toll house before it was a brand, so some of the recipes that were on chocolate and morsel packages since the 70s are not necessarly in the book, as they were probably neslie recipes. Still there are a lot of great old recipes. She uses the minimal proportion size (the amount in her macoroni and cheese is probably equivalent to the size of a craft mac and cheese box) but she does suggest you half the recipes. I like that you don't have huge portions, as I always wind up halving recipes. I think she wanted to make the proportions a smaller size to brides or future brids or anybody who wants to learn to cook could practive.It is an old book so a lot of food items that are found in books writen a bit later were probably not that popular then, such as quiche recipes and Italian food (or perhaps in rural new England everything was mostly meat and potatos back then, not saying that's not fine) but there are some nice old meals and desserts that you do not see much today and in its origional form, for example, the online chiffon pies recipes are often made with jello brand gelatine and cool whip, which does not appleal to me. Hers are made with egg whites and the base is made with eggs yolks. Now people are concerned about bacteria or just want an easier way to make stuff, and (understandably) recipes are changed. But I like to see the original recipes; as I like cooking from scratch and if you are worried about eating raw eggs, you could pastarize them at home. (IF you prefer and older with a more modern variety you might like the Joy of Cooking 1960s version or a later version or Mastering the Art of French Cooking)

I found many wonderful recipes in this book. Would recommend to everyone looking for good vintage recipes.

Michael Sherrard has written a book that is not just one on what answers to give, but rather how to do apologetics. For the answers that he gives, you can expect you’ll be getting a good basic run-down. Again, I do not fault a book for this. In fact, this could be an excellent starting book for someone just entering the field and is along the lines of Greg Koukl’s Tactics. Sherrard is not just interested in building up the knowledge of the apologist, which is something important to do, but he is also interested in building up the character of the apologist in a watching world.I think this is extremely important, but I was also a bit cautious at the beginning. I think many of us can take a modernist ethic on how to treat people and read it into the text. For instance, I would not agree that everyone deserves respect. There are many people out there who are not listening and are not interested in listening. For those people, I prefer to keep them away from the flock that is searching. Still, something like this would quite likely be my only area of disagreement with Sherrard. I am one who believes in carrying the staff to lead the sheep and the rod to deal with the predators.For much of what is said on spiritual formation, I agree with it and I know I have much to learn in many areas. Like many men, prayer is something I work on. For this reason, I have a mentor so I pray every day and I email him about how I am doing and he can sometimes give advice back in fact to what I have to say. I do think mentorship is something that Christians should be taking part in.Sherrard goes through some basic arguments on each front and in fact demonstrates how he has used them in real-life encounters. His approach is simple and yet it seems to work well. The cautionary statement I’d make here is that many of these encounters take place in person and it could be different when doing apologetics on the internet and in a public forum where other people will see what happens and will respond. When I debate on the internet, I am very rarely trying to reach the person who I am talking to. Instead, I am trying to reach the audience that is viewing the debate.I did say the book is a primer on apologetics, but the good news is that Sherrard knows that. He says to read more books like his. He’s done a great service by including a bibliography at the end that lists books that you can go to on a number of topics so you can learn more about that area and of course, you won’t be an expert in all of them, so just pick a few and then go from there and see what happens.Overall, I recommend Sherrard’s book. As I began this book, I had high expectations due to the title. Apologists can be somewhat aloof and non-relational, which can be detrimental to sharing the knowledge they possess. I’ve long believed that often times we, as apologists, miss the last part of 1 Peter 3:15 that we are to be prepared to give an answer with gentleness and respect. This implies we first and foremost engage in our craft relationally.Mike Sherrard gets it. His book flows from identifying who we are, what we do, what we know and where we should go. At times, it is not an easy read and I would be inclined to give it four stars because of that fact. That was until I got to chapter fourteen.Mike’s first words in this chapter is “Will you go?” The name of my ministry is I Will Go Ministry, based on Isaiah 6:8, so naturally, I was drawn more closely to the topic of the chapter. In this chapter, Mike encourages us to go. He models his call after the acts of the apostle Paul in Acts 17. Paul went. He eventually found his way to Athens, the heart of intelligentsia in the ANE. “Many came to believe” was the result of Paul’s reasoning with them where he met them as he went. Mike continues in the remaining chapters addressing the importance of going to the home and the church. How do you “go” to your home and the church? Read the book. Because of the wisdom and excellent manner in which Mike presents the arguments that we must go to defend the faith, and not merely wait for opportunities, this book is a must read for anyone interested in reaching those with shaky faith or even no faith. Buy the book. Five stars.

The one who glorifies God is the believer who is able to defend his/her faith humbly, honestly, accurately, and with a life that backs it up.Path: Sherrard divides his book into four main parts: 1) How one's life approves or denies the message; 2) Keys to what to do while defending your faith; 3) Truths which are essential; 4) An annotated bibliography of helpful resources.Sources: He is a self-confessed C.S. Lewis fan, a follower of Greg Koukl, and reader of Habermas. There are many other influences in his life, but those are a few I noted (you can see his bibliography which reveals many more).Agreement: The strength of this book was in three areas:The recognition that apologetics do not save anyone - the Gospel does (pg 43).The focus on having a life that backs up one's words (whole first part of the book).The annotated bibliography at the end.I wouldn't list this as a one stop shop for apologetics. I would hand this to someone interested in being more proactive about defending their faith. I also would give this to someone who is very involved with defending their faith but it annoying about it.I would agree with Sherrard that "Mere Christianity" by Lewis and "Tactics" by Koukl are must reads along side of this.Personal App: Am I living up to the message I share?Favorite Quote: "Defending your faith is not an act of arrogance. Rather, it is an act of love" (16)."I believe that the power to save someone rests in the gospel and not in us or in our arguments" (43).It would be worth another read and I would recommend it.

An amazing photo book and great conversation piece.

I recommend this book for people that like to paint body's, the material in inside is spectacular and the photos are incredible and excellent selection. I recommend this book, good price and excellent delivery too.

Each of these beautifully rendered photographs suggests repose, tranquility, absorption in the beauty of the male form appreciating the Grecian grace that comes with health and care of the physique. At times he pairs images of the same model in sleeping form, and in awakening to the realities of and personal pleasures of day, while at other times he concentrates on the form at rest or sleep, in bed with subtle light or in the beauty of nature outdoors.The images of men together are particularly significant in that they are not in active gratification, but instead in those moments of repose, tenderness and warmth that are the moods here. beautiful photos, i liked quite a few and some not so much. but on the whole beautiful, sexy and soothing too.
