This is a good book to read for anyone wanting to spend time outdoors. It's great to be outdoors but it's also extremely important to be aware of the dangers that may mot be so obvious.

I wish my merit badge requirement books had read like Ted Alvarez’s The Survival Hacker’s Handbook. Written with humor and sprinkled with some fun unconventional fixes, this book is a how-to guide (based on the author’s research and experimentation) for the weekend warrior who may fall into a sticky situation. Alvarez includes his own anecdotes from the wilderness, as well as several stories from adventurers who have been “Mauled by a Grizzly” or “Lost in an Alaskan Blizzard.”Alvarez begins the book by mapping out the basic premise that all the information in the book is based upon, the “Rule of 15.” He says that people in dire situations can survive: 15 minutes without shelter. 15 hours without water. 15 days without food. 15 months without being found. (Mental deterioration may occur after that.) From these assertions come the knowledge of How to… Build snow shelters. Start a fire with hand sanitizer or a cashew. Self-diagnose hyperthermia. My 12 month old loved the 5 flip pages. She is now 16 months and isn't as interested in it though. The pages and flip paper is sturdy

The only reason I'm giving it 4 starts is because the flaps are kind of flimsy. My grandson LOVES this book! So he wants me to read it over and over, and he also tries to read it himself over and over- so 16mo old fingers are flapping it up, which should be expected with a board book. Other than that I have to say it is great, simple, age appropriate story that has my grandson literally jumping for joy when we read it! 1st choice in book reads at Grandma's house every time!

This is my grandson's FAVORITE book, we read it over and over and over again. He tries reading it to himself turning each page saying "no" and laughing. I can not recommend this book enough!! I also got the Toes, Ears & Nose book and the Where is Baby's Belly Button - they were OK but nothing compared to this book.

This is my baby's favorite book. We had another Karen Katz book "Daddy Hugs." I noticed he was more attentive and engaged with "Daddy Hugs," more than other books. With other books, his eyes would wander and he'd get easily distracted. I think he was attracted to the vibrant colors and patterns in "Daddy Hugs."So I decided to order two more Karen Katz books. "Zoom, Zoom, Baby!" gets the most reaction from him because of the flaps. I am considering ordering more "lift-the-flap" books for him.I highly recommend Karen Katz. Other books, like the popular classic "Goodnight Moon" are not as colorful. In fact, "Goodnight Moon" has many pages that are in dull grayscale.. these are the pages that my baby has absolutely no interest in and will start looking away from the book. There's even one page with NO illustrations that reads "goodbye nobody." Seriously?? You're better off with books like Karen Katz's.

Our 2 year old LOVES this board book. The story line is simple enough that after reading it twice, he could flip through the book on his own and tell the story by himself. He loves the flaps and thinks it is hilarious that there are things hiding behind them. He's been a bit of a late talker, but we've really watched his vocabulary improve as he's begun to try to "read" books to himself out loud...and this book started it all. We highly recommend it for young children. The book itself is sturdy enough to handle a two year old...our only complaint would be that the flaps themselves are rather thin and probably won't hold up too well, but that is to be expected with a lift-the-flap book. We've definitely already got our moneys worth, and we've only had it a couple of weeks. Buy this book!

My baby and I love the Karen Katz books ( I've purchased the Spanish versions of "Where is Baby's Belly button" and "Peek-a-baby" as I am hoping for her to be bilingual). Decided to purchase this books for as a birthday gift for a two year old. As soon as I received it, I immediately wanted to keep it for my baby! I didn't, but I am hoping that Karen Katz develops more Spanish books. Some of the reviews do mention that there is a repetition of being too babyish. Some of the words can get a bit babyish, but as a parent/grandparent etc., we should have the ability to improvise and adjust as we see fit. Not all children are the same, and I cannot comment on older children but as I've mentioned, my 7 month old LOVES these books.

Really a cute book! My grandson loved it! He liked the big pictures and the flaps to open. One of his favorite books.Will purchase another in the series!

My children have several of these lift the flap books and they are so worn the flaps are torn to pieces! I have used tape to keep them all back in (because my kids are wild on these flaps) but overall these book are well made. They are easy to read to small toddlers and even my K5 learning to read child enjoys sounding out the pages. Would recommend Karen Katz books!

I bought this for a 1 yr old child, and it's a HIT! I knew the kiddo loved it when he kept picking it from the bookshelf and saying, "Baby Read". He loved the book so much I bought the series written by Katz.

If you are enlisting in the military, good - a patriotic journey, where you can build skills and see the world. However there is one thing your recruiter didn't tell you. Your ability to get into a department that you want, depends on how well you can take a quiz - just like you did with the SAT, or whatever those test are called in current times. Those test asked those really stupid questions about the cost of ice cream if a train leaves New York at 4:00 and it is 20 degrees on Colorado. This book will teach you how to answer those ridiculous questions that WILL control your destiny. Get a copy and memorize it... then serving your country will lead to a great career.

I would easily recommend this book to some people who are looking to solely study from the book, but also have no intentions of using the online practice questions. considering this book is from 2013 i discovered after it was delivered to my home. That being said there is no place for this book on the Dummies web site, and you cannot access the practice questions which you have paid for. Waste of money.

I have already served in the military years ago. But I wondered if there was a primer that might have helped me improve my test scores. I think this book would help. Unfortunately it's hard to learn enough from a book to do well on the math and reading comprehension of the ASBAB test. Study hard in math and English class in high school. It's hard to cram from a book to pass a comprehensive test that covers many topics. I think it may give you a few extra points, however.

Great book. Arrived as promised in good condition. I work in the schools, and use this book and its companion volume to try to persuade some under-motivated students that plan to go into the military that the service DOES care how well you do in high school.

Bought for my 19 year old son and now I know why he hasn't received a high score on his previous ASVAB test. There are words in the vocabulary section I've never even heard of and I'm 42 years old!

I thought I was just buying an extra book, that I would most likely not put attention to. But, it was not. This book is filled with practice questions, which I got to study before hand thanks to the "2015 / 2016 ASVAB For Dummies". These two books makes a great combination. One to study and the other to test how far you have improved by testing yourself. I am glad I bought it. I recommend it to everyone who is thinking of taking the ASVAB or the AFQT. Just have in mind, that this book is all about questions, of course it will give you the correct answer in the back of it, but it will not go into detail as much as the "2015 / 2016 ASVAB For Dummies" book.

Not very useful for Xterras! Wish they would come out with a book for just Xterras. This one is too vague with Xterras.

I buy most of my car repair manuals from Half price books, if possible. Can't go wrong paying half for something hardly even looked at.

I broke some clips trying to pry things apart, it would have been more useful if it tells you which direction to pull so you know how the clip will come out. Also I couldn't find the diagram for the cargo light in my Frontier. The top brake is in between the cargo lights, so I tried looking there and also for the interior light, but both diagrams don't mention about the truck bed cargo light. I can't get it to work even with new bulbs.The manual is ok, but not great. I just search youtube for videos of other people doing it. I would have paid twice as much if they sent a DVD or 2 or how ever many it would take to show you everything. Maybe even $50 if the videos were fully comprehensive.

I have owned Haynes books in the past, often good, but for Pathfinder repair this is very poor. It might be fine for the other models listed, but don't bother if you are a Pathfinder owner. For example, I recently replaced the plugs on my 2002 Pathfinder without this book (using info from blogs online). This book devotes a few paragraphs to plug replacement - but almost entirely related to the other (non-Pathfinder) models. The book does not even reference the time consuming process of removing hoses, brackets, and other absolutely necessary procedures to get to the plugs (they are not sitting in plain sight as the book suggests, not even close). The blogs online had way better info, down to how many screws, clamps, hoses, etc. to remove. Also, the troubleshooting in this book (for any model) is weak. You are better off troubleshooting with a scanner (Amazon sells them cheap, under $50).

I've used this manual to replace valve cover seals and brake pads so far. It's very good, but each time I had to call my local parts store because of big gaps the book left in instructions. Both times it was about how to orient parts that were different than the ones that were previously installed. They also suggest some measures that are unnecessary. But such is to be expected when they are dispensing general directions for repairs.If this is your first time venturing beyond oil changes, I suggested you talk to a few people at your local parts store about what you are planning to do, and how difficult it may be. Also, make sure you read the instructions AND warning label on all of the products you use. When the book tells you to use breathing protection do it. For example, brake pads contain asbestos which is highly carcinogenic when inhaled, and some accumulates as dust around the brakes.I would also recommend buying chemical resistant gloves when using the various cleaning chemicals it suggests using. Brake cleaner, for example, will actually eat through latex gloves.All-in-all, I'm very satisfied with the book. And have saved around $1000 with only 5-6 hours of work!

Nice manual, just enough to get you through without a full shop manual. Great vendor.

It didn't help at all when my husband was replacing the tailgate handle. The pictures showed parts for other models and not the part for the 2001 Nissian Frontier (1 vs. 2 levers). Waste of money but we will make the best of it and pass the book onto a friend who does side work fixing vehicles.

This book has been amazingly helpful for this french horn player. As of two months ago, I couldn't go above a high g. Now, I'm playing consistently a's as well as the occasional Bb. Just by warming up with the chromatic scales, I've pushed my range up in a very short amount of time. I don't know the effect it would have on any other instruments, but I suspect it would be similar. For french horn players hoping to expand their ranges, this book is a must!

Even though this book is for cornet, I bought it anyway and I play French horn.It is very useful for horn in many areas including lip slurs, breathing, finger exercises, range, control, and overall technical crispness.Some of the exercises can be quite high for horn, but I expected that. It does the job and am happy with my purchase.

This book was reccommended to me by my new and current trumpet tutor, Glenn Bengry of Michigan. It is everything he said it would be. Enjoying practicing the exercises under Glenn's guidance. I am a 62 year old comeback trumpeter, having been off the trumpet since 1965. After not playing in over 46 years, with the exception of one period of a couple months in early '94, and then was without professional tutoring. I began studying the trumpet in beginner's band in school in 1959 or thereabouts, but quit just before my third year of high school was to begin, due to gum disease that resulted in all upper teeth being removed. I was just 16 years old.Have been practicing since Nov '10, took my first trumpet lesson in Feb, '11, and just had my third lesson last Tues. I am committed to constantly working on improving my trumpet skills, with the goal of performing with bands on regular basis starting as soon as I'm ready.Joined up with a local concert band last Nov., and have sat with them in rehearsal several times since, but haven't felt prepared enough to actually play yet. Feel now that I am getting very close to that day; have outstanding invitation to sit in with the band as often as I want, without any pressure whatsoever to actually play. Great bunch of people/musicians.Highly recommend this book to any comeback trumpeter especially as a tool for getting back their trumpet skills, and improving them.

I don't know why some customers say this book is for beginners. I'm a beginner and I bought this book when I opened it I thought people are right this is for advanced players but since I don't know the fingering for the lower notes so I wrote the fingering for the excercises on the first page and started with lesson 1 and 2 and I'm doing great . The excercises are going smoothly. I'm sure by studying this method everyday will make me a better trumpet player.

This is a pretty good book for a medium-high level player. It isn't a book that will work for lower level player, it is just to advanced. For more experienced players, it helps you work on your tone and technique without the stress of playing super high.

I enjoyed this book and found the information helpful. The author speaks to how the environment for dogs has changed with our urbanization and higher expectations that dogs must be under their owners control at all times. Also dogs are used less and less as workers and more and more as companions. The most responsible dog owners usually neuter their pets so these companion dogs do not get to pass on their genetics. It is the working dogs, the show dogs, and the dogs of irresponsible owners who are most likely to pass on their genes. Dogs are not wolves and they are not little people. They have a strong urge to bond to people. They live in the moment. Except in rare cases physical punishment of a dog is counterproductive as it creates a less trusting, less bonded, more anxious animal. If punishment is used it must be immediate. The dog cannot understand being punished for something in the past. Reward based training generates a happy, trusting animal. Dogs naturally wish to please. Most of their negative behavior is the result of fear, not an urge to dominate. When selecting a companion dog stay away from the most popular and thus inbred breeds where genetic weaknesses are concentrated. The first eight weeks of the puppy’s life is very important in determining its personality. Look for a puppy who has been raised in a home and who has had a variety of experiences. A puppy who has lived isolated in a kennel or backroom somewhere is likely to be fearful and maladjusted. Taking a young dog to obedience training class exposes the dog to other dogs and people as well as teaching it important commands. Much of this information is commonsense, but I appreciate the reinforcement. The book could have shorter. As others have pointed out there was considerable repetition. The information that was repeated was important information so I did not find it overly annoying. Having dog companions for most of my life and having trained several of them in obedience and agility I can attest to the value of reward based training versus punishment based. Dogs just become fearful when they are hurt. Eventually a fearful dog may become aggressive out of self-defense. The author explains what dogs are capable of understanding. It is unfair to hold an animal responsible for something that is beyond its capability to comprehend.

An outstanding and clear explanation of the history and relevance or lack of, in relating dog behavior to wolf or wolf packs as well as their roles past and present and issues with their nurture, breeding and training. However, if you have read 'In Defence of Dogs', know that it is the same book under a different title. Still, either book will certainly shed light on why today's behaviorists and trainers are moving quickly towards positive, rewards based training and avoiding things like 'alpha dog' and 'dominance aggression' and instead dealing with stress and fear issues and socialization.

Great read, and 180 degrees opposite to what the "celebrity trainers" espouse. I heard Dr Bradshaw discuss this book on NPR and thought he made enough sense to warrant the purchase. I'm so glad I stumbled upon it; Dr Bradshaw brings together anthropology, biology and history together to debunk the "dog-as-miniature-wolf" (at least as concerns our dogs --Chihuahuas) theory of dogs. Having done so, he then addresses the crazy training methodologies dog owners hear constantly. Education is a wonderful thing! So, why 4 stars? I found my attention wandering about after perhaps 30 minutes with Dr Bradshaw. Then, I'd have to reread. I don't like having to reread. But, he's a wee bit dry :)

Quite a good read for those who love and are interested in dogs. While rooted in science the book isn't difficult to read and I enjoyed the way the subject matter was presented. I found I shared similar attitudes to the author which no doubt helped with my enjoyment of the book. It's great to have this kind of information available these days. Well worth a read if you're a "dog person"

Starts off very slow (not quite as grueling as his cat book's first few chapters though), but it's worth atleast skimming through until you get to the meat of the book. Extremely interesting review of dog studies that leads to an analysis of the different training methods used. His logical reasoning leads to conclusions that are hard to dispute. I learned so much from this that will greatly enhance not only the relationship with my dog, but also that of my friends and their dogs.

This book is deep. You really need to be alone and focus while reading. Science says a lot about dogs, I think everyone who owns, and trains dogs should understand what makes dogs behave the way they do.Love this book.

It's nice to have a sense of what current science can tell us about dogs, partly because I always science interesting but also because it's nice to have a better sense how to interact with the many dogs I meet. This book provides an easy to read summary of such information, well-grounded in research but not bogged down by minutiae.That said, I'd like to echo a clarification some other reviewers have already offered: this isn't a how-to manual for training your dog. Despite a sub-title of 'How the new science of dog behavior can make you a better friend to your pet', there isn't much in the way of specific advice regarding how to actually be said better friend. Personally, I didn't mind, because as I said, I enjoyed just reading about the science on its own. For anyone who's curious in general or about dogs in particular, this is a book worth reading, just so long as you're aware going in that it's purely an overview of the current state of canine science.
