Bought this book for a BS nursing program. I don't usually write reviews for textbooks, but as a book lover, I have to give compliments when they are due! This book is very progressive regarding its content and perspective. After so much of the same content in nursing school that dryly proclaims the importance of leadership and contributing to the profession, I frequently found my eyes widening while reading this book. Somehow, the authors consistently, boldly, and beautifully call for and describe the transformative leadership that is so needed in nursing today. I can't put my finger on what it is, as I have not read the entire book (we were assigned sections)––but I just kept thinking, "Wow, I've never seen it said like that (in nursing). That's awesome!" This book is relevant, well-written, and full of paradigm-shifting inspirational material.

I purchased this book as a requirement for a leadership class.The typeset is light blue and unusually small.This made the book difficult to read.I usually purchase my textbooks as Kindle versions; however, when I purchased this book in August the Kindle version was not available.I would recommend the Kindle version as a opposed to the paperbook version of this book.

I'm taking a star off because this book is almost entirely made up of quotes from other authors. If you were to remove all text that is between quotation marks, it would only be 5 pages long. The back to back quotes make for hard reading and I would have preferred more original text from the author.

Do not spend money on this. I've never seen anything more crammed with meaningless cites--no quotes, no bullets, nothing to tell you exactly what it was that the reference author was saying. This book violates every law of academia writing and is full of half truths and implied associations with famous, reputable authors. Case in point:". . . Many creative, motivated, and enthusiastic individuals thrive on chaos and are most successful in their personal and professional lives, despite the incredibly confusing climate in which they function. Hawking (1987) views this uncertainty as opening the way to randomness and unpredictability that are perceived by many as refreshing."The authors, Sheila Grossman and Theresa Valiga have the unmitigated gal to cite Stephen Hawking in A Brief History of Time. I sure as heck do not recall reading any such drivel, paraphrased or otherwise, in that book. Grossman and Valiga list A Brief History of Time as published in 1987---it was not published until 1988!In the opening paragraph of Grossman and Valiga's chapter six, a chapter dedicated to masculine vs feminine management styles (don't get me going on that topic--this book is a turd if ever I've been forced to read one) they carry their perplexing and misleading habit of plastering you with meaningless citations to a new all time low:"Most studies about leaders and leadership focus on men and the male perspective. Although this information is valuable, and much of what we know about leadership--the need to have a vision, the reciprocal relationship between leaders and followers, the willingness to take risks and so on---has broad applicability, it still is rooted in a masculine framework. A growing body of literature, however, notes differences in the ways women lead (Austen, 2002; Babcock & Laschever, 2003; Felder, 1996; Gordon, 1991; Grunswald, 1992; Helgesen, 1990; Kaufman & Grace, 2011; Keohane, 2010; Klenke, 1996; Kram & Hampton, 1998; Lambert & Gardiner, 2009; Lipman-Blumen, 1992; Long, 1998; May, 2001; Melia & Lyttle, 1986; Paludi & Coates, 2011; Rosener, 1990; Salas-Lopez, Deitrick, Mahady, Gertner, & Sabino, 2011; Schein, 1989; Sylvia, Grund, Kimminau, Ahmed, Marr & Cooper, 2010; Yudd, 2010). Because most nurses are women, understanding gender perspectives in leadership is an essential area of exploration."Now tell me what was the point of plastering those three sentences with 20 cites?This book is a useless turkey that should not find its way into the classroom or boardroom. It buries the few good points it might have other wise made with ten chapters of drivel and the so called annotated is only a partial list of the references, so still no clue what these two are babbling about most of the time. Oh and most of the book's references are as old as I am.

The text is pretty redundant and it's all in paragraph form (no bullets or lists), so it's difficult to reference points of the text. There were a few good points buried in between the repetition and filler, but they were few and far between.

Had to read it for school, the book of a million different ways of saying the same thing over and over.

I guess he did warn us with the picture on the front that reads "A Memoir of Fumbling Toward Adulthood", but I was disappointed that he stopped his tale at the point he got his first Broadway show - after all, he's been in 2 of the biggest hits in the past 15 years, I'd have liked to hear about his work on them and his famous friends (Gavin Creel is the only semi-famous person that appears in this book). I guess he's holding out for a 2nd book?Part inspiration for future actors, part a sad tale of love(s) gone wrong, but all heart, this really is a lovely debut for the author. He's sassy and brassy in all the right places, you'd definitely want to be in his posse in late night NYC.

Over-night success takes a LONG time to achieve. Andrew Rannell tells the story of his professional and personal life with great wit and charm. As a performer, naturally, he delivers the goods as an audio presentation without it ever feeling as if he is 'performing' his story for the microphone. If you are at all sensitive about gay life (I'm not - if you are, get over it...) you may relate to his personal/sex life stories as well, but they are not shared to be 'shocking' , in fact some young people in his camp may find his frankness inspiring. He paints a vivid picture of the NYC club scene of his youth as well as the long journey of luck, drive, and determination that has lead him to be the talented star he is today. My only complaint is (as is the case with all audio books) I would love to see the photos that the print edition must have! Would it kill them to give us a link to a PDF of the photos with memoirs like this?

as a big andrew rannells lover and fan, i may be a bit bias but i thoroughly enjoyed this book! i’m more into fiction and rarely read biography or nonfiction but his writing is so fun and it made the experience so delightful. anyone how knows andrew can see he has this wonderful energy and such a fun person and in his writings that personality really shines through! the book is full of wild and wacky stories to give you laugh but still shares dark past and give makes you view andrew in a different light. you really start to know him more and i’m happy i got to read this!! i really suggests it to anyone who wants to pursue a career in theater, book includes real stuggles from a very talented actor and funny theater jokes!!

What a great read. Rannells' writer-voice is fun and funny, which is not a surprise if you have ever heard him speak or watched an interview with him. If you enjoy his work as an actor, you will most likely enjoy this book as well. I was also struck by how touching--and honest--the book is. I'm part of the Omaha theatre community, so I know a bit about the world he grew up in. I was just getting involved in the community as he was preparing to leave, though I remember meeting him once after he saw a play I was in, and I was struck by what a friendly, open kid he was. To his credit, it looks like that quality remains in the man he has become.

I started this book when I came home from work one night and couldn’t put it down until I finished it roughly 4 hours later. One of the best and most relatable memoirs I’ve ever read. To me, it’s a perfect book.

Good example of how a memoir can end up being a really enjoyable read even if if you don't know much about the person prior to reading. Loved the use of humor in this one and the stories of what led him to getting his first big break on Broadway.After graduating high school, Andrew Rannells left his hometown of Omaha and moved to New York City with dreams of having an acting career. In this book Andrew shares stories of getting involved with community theater as a kid, coming to terms with being gay in Middle America, and surviving in a city that is full of people with the exact same hopes and dreams of making it big in the acting world.Andrew is just a really good storyteller. There's a nice balance of humor and heart throughout the book. He's an easy person to relate to as he shared his feelings of not having a clue at what he was doing most of the time and just kinda had to learn along the way. Your heart breaks when he goes into detail about the times he was taken advantage of by sexual predators. When he starts to experience some success, you can't help but feel happy for him. Overall, a good memoir and I would love reading another book in which he talks about his life after making it big.I received a free advance copy from the publisher but was under no obligation to post a review. I really enjoy short focused chapters, unlike in a lot of modern textbooks, they never drag on, but keep you interested. The tone of the book is conversational, not formal at all. You can really tell that Euler enjoyed teaching as much as he enjoyed doing mathematics.The reprint is very high quality. Though normally, I wouldn't trust anything that comes out of Microsoft Word, the book's typesetting is of high quality. It's not TeX, you will not find a single ligature here, or sub-millimeter precision spacing, but it still looks good. Some of the decorum, the squiggly lines announcing each new chapter, seem to have been lost in translation to new format, so pages look a little austere in comparison to original. Title image is noticeably pixelated, a little more care could be taken to pick out a higher resolution image for the title page. But other than that there's nothing I can nitpick on.EDIT: Found a blooper: reference numbers don't match up!

I'm a very slow learner. I've always had a problem with understanding things. Especially math. But this book has changed things for me because of the explanations it contains. And even though I've never had much money, it is worth twice the price. For what its worth, that's my honest opinion.

I purchased this book excepting it to be a tad bit shorter but that was my fault as a consumer making spontaneous purchases rather than investigating a bit further. This is a textbook sized book and it packs a lot of information all taught by Euler (possibly the greatest mathematician known to man). Some of the language used in the book can be a bit confusing but considering this is a reprint and probably was translated by people without math degrees it is passable.Definitely worth its value.

Starts off easy enough for a novice like me to follow because of how well he explains himself. Then he leads you into more advanced equations at just the right pace. I think this book is a gem, glad I found it.

He was so prolific and had such an impact on the field of math that anything he wrote is significant and should be read by anyone serious about learning math. He is one of the giants whose shoulders Newton famously said he stood upon to reach the heights he did, which were also enormous

This is more about the review of the book's physical attributes than the review of Euler's masterpiece. It is one of the best mathematical book written for general population by one of the greatest mathematician. It is more or less on par with Euclid's Elements (still I would rate Euclid's masterpiece above). The other editions I bought earlier, reprinted the older formats with illegible formulas and letters. This version resolves those problems. I wish they would have maintained the notes in the same pages instead of combining in the last pages. Great clarity. Larger print. Have enough space to take notes.

I liked the beginning where Euler defines the mathematical symbols to be used. For instance, we learn that equal to (=) is beginning to be used at the time. Further on, when defining numbers (natural, rational,...) It is clear that at the time there was not an axiomatic number definition. Rather, Euler defines number properties with clear applied examples (investment, principal, debts an so on ). The last chapters are devoted to solving equations up to third degree. These turned out being rather cryptic for a non professional practitioner.Altogether, the book is a sort of showcase of the practice and teaching of mathematics at the time, and I bought it for that. I have no complaints about.The translator/editor did a good job updating the symbols and keeping the tangy archaic writing.

This book was not at all what I was expecting for a group read aloud for 8-12 year olds. The first few chapters were a totally different vibe than the rest of the book. I was not thrilled with there being an attempted rape scene and animal brutality (killed in anger/frustration-not for food or in self defense) to have to skim over or explain to the younger kids in the group. That being said, it was a fairly realistic portrayal of life at sea for pirates. Just not what I was looking for in a classroom setting.

This book is still worth reading (again) 20+ years later. Negroponte didn't get too many things wrong, and while he didn't anticipate self-driving cars (in the section on smart cars) or ad stalking and other surveillance on the I-Net, or Bitcoin, there's enough here that was still relevant that I was glad I got a copy to re-read. Negroponte did a better job of pointing out the important issues and where we might be twenty years later than, say, Gates did in "The Road Ahead", given that the I-Net for the masses was brand new in 1995.

I read this book, partly based on the implied challenge of one of my professors. After finishing it, I can only say I'm glad I didn't pay full price for it.For starters, you can't blame Negroponte for the dated material in the book. After all, it was published in 1995. One of the things I really enjoyed about this book was reading some of the predictions made by Negroponte back then, and how they turned out. The "atoms vs. bits" argument was arguably revolutionary at the time and I think it is a relevant method of discussing the digital revolution with students who were born either during or shortly before the book being published. Dinosaurs such as I can remember the days before the internet and when we had to use typewriters to work on papers. I remember how completely freaked out I was the first time I heard my computer "speak" in 1994, after installing a sound card and CD ROM drive - so the concept of interactive computing and hence moving bits vs. moving atoms is a bit of an eye-opener to an old timer. To those who come of age post-Internet, its a good way of grounding you in the history and function of digital life. The best arguments in the book show up in the introduction and in the conclusion - I think that's where Negroponte is at his best. He pontificates (as well as predicts!) very well in these sections - much better than in the rest of the book.Between the intro and conclusion... well... there seems to be a lot of rambling. Kind of reminds me of a guy at work who won't stop talking once he starts. And then its scattershot from one topic to another, blah de blah de blah, with no real substance. The best part between the opening and closing is when Negroponte goes off about the stupidity of fax technology. Quite frankly I agree - why type something on a computer, print it out, put it in another machine, send it electronically to wherever, so that someone at the other end can print out another copy? Complete waste of paper, to say the least. Makes me wonder if the lumber/timber industry isn't involved somehow... but other than that, there just isn't much there.That said, this isn't really a bad book. At times I found myself nodding in agreement, other times nodding off to sleep, and other times laughing out loud either at the foolishness of some predictions or the uncanny accuracy of others. Overall however, I wasn't too terribly impressed.

Queer Jews provides a wonderful introduction to the subject of homosexuality & Judaism. The essays are well-written and thought provoking and the notes at the end of the essays provide a good starting place for readers who want to delve more deeply into a certain subject. The glossary at the back of the book made the Yiddish and other potentially unfamiliar terminology accessible to a much wider audience.The essays are written by various artists and employ various terminologies. One should have at least some familiarity with lingo used in connection with the LGBT community, although no extensive knowledge would be required (for example, authors may use queer, lgbt and gay interchangeably). The essays range from exceptionally well written to decently well written, but there are a variety of topics covered so I believe most readers would find something of interest within the pages.The book is written primarily for a Jewish audience and would be particularly helpful to LGBT Jews and congregations or organizations seeking to make themselves more LGBT-affirming. As the topics and voices are so diverse, however, I believe its applicability will extend far beyond this limited audience. This is one book that is definitely worth a read.

A Jew is not a queer. A Jew who says is queer is an evil sinner committing a capital offense. If a Jew sleeps with his mother he is evil.

"Queer Jews" deserves its place among the previous Lesbian and Lesbigay Jewish Anthologies, Evelyn Torton-Beck's Nice Jewish Girls (1982, reprint and expanded 1989) and Christi Balka and Andy Rose's Twice Blessed: On Being Lesbian or Gay and Jewish (1989). It not only pays homage to its predecessors (see the Introduction and Balka and Rose's own contribution), it honors them by reflecting some of the changes that have occurred in the past 20 years.This is immediately intimated by the title's use of the word `queer' and further carried through with essays by transgender or non-traditionally gendered Jews. Although `queer,' is used throughout the book mainly as an umbrella term "to include lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgendered people" (14) when one delves more deeply into a number of the individual contributions, one senses the mobilization of the term queer as something that "marks a suspension of identity as something fixed, coherent, and natural"(Jagose, Queer Theory, p. 98). Queerness and Jewishness are thus both expanded--or stretched--within this book's pages. Thus Queer Jews not only calls into question conventional understandings of sexual identity by deconstructing the categories, oppositions and equations that sustain them, it similarly calls into question (many) conventional understandings of `Jewish identity'. This is a good thing.And so it that an essay about a traditional Jewish lesbian wedding is bound together with a cogent questioning of the Reform Movement's recent decision to recognize (sanction?) `same-sex' marriage. And the stories of a non-traditionally gendered Reform Hebrew School teacher, a gay Orthodox rabbi, a closeted Conservative rabbinical student, and a secular `liberationist fem' are similarly bound together in this book. One is also invited--or swept--on the road with the creator (`mother') of the groundbreaking film "Trembling Before G-d", further carried into the Yiddish Film Archives for queer subtexts, and finally (finely) guided through queer viewings of Angels in America and The Producers. Added to this, Queer Jews tra(ns)verses geographical boundaries, including essays about queer Jews in the U.S., Israel, and Canada (the latter of which cites two articles by Jewish lesbians in Australia).Sprinkled throughout the book are essays specifically about activism (though all of the essays, let's be clear, are activism)--in schools, on the streets, at Seders taken to the streets, and at the Kotel (Western Wall). One essay deftly delivers us into the tangled web of anti-semitism, homophobia, classicism, and racism all present in queer Jewish adoptions.And there's history here too--history in the making as well as glimpses of the range of GLBTQ Jewish history over the past decades. Could one ask for more?Emphatically yes. Queer Jews earns its place in the expanding canon--let's just call it torah--of GLBTQ Jews. I learned something from all of the contributors, even those whose politics, understanding of Judaism, or presentation of themselves as "queer" rankled or frustrated me. (Actually, I think I learned the most from the authors who frustrated me!)The editors and all the book's contributors have done an excellent job of capturing the diversity of a new generation of queer Jews and the impact they are having on both the Jewish and queer communities. This book has made me re-examine what being a gay man and a Jew means to me. Bravo to Shneer and Aviv for putting together such a timely and insightful book!
