although I understand some of the concepts Lamerson is trying to point out within this book, it is very vague. A lot of the examples he gives with his devotionals do not line up with the rest of the chapter and the Greek grammar being discussed. I wish there would be more examples, or more pages that goes more in depth of what is being discussed. In several cases, he shows how the reader can find the grammar being used based on the spelling in the Greek, but never actually says why this particular grammar is being used in the context, or even says what it does. And as many other people have pointed out in their reviews, there is no answer key that could help when trying to learn these concepts.
I purchased this a while ago and finally got around to reading it since I am now focused on learning Koine Greek. I freely admit that I am lost with respect to some features of English grammar, and was thus dismayed that the book does not contain an answer key for the exercises. Not even a link to a website! I am totally on my own to guess whether I really understand it or not. I love the humor and the helpful mnemonic devices, but just a few more pages - or a link to a website - devoted to the answers would make this a true winner.
I read this the summer after my first year Greek grammar course, and I wasn't reading it because I really needed/wanted the help. I was evaluating it to see if it'd be a resource I'd recommend to some of my classmates that were struggling, and I was impressed. Lamerson is clear, concise, and his examples are very illuminating. If I were an instructor, I'd consider making this required reading (even though Mounce's BBG has sections on English grammar too), or at least recommend it for students struggling with grammatical concepts.
This book is an indispensable resource for people like me, who have been out of school longer than I care to admit. It takes the English Grammar that is necessary to understand the different cases in Greek Grammar and makes it easy to remember and understand again.
Don't get the Kindle version if you want to read the Greek. The Greek doesn't increase in size with the view settings, and the diacritical marks just look like blobs. I really liked the English content, especially the humor. I would have loved an answer key.
This is a very handy reference for those who are trying to learn biblical Greek but need an instant refresher of the parts of speech in English and don't have much time to get up to speed. Very helpful. If you need to learn how to diagram sentences, you'll need an additional resource for that. This one includes only the most cursory review of that topic. I still recommmend it for students of biblical Greek.
Thankful I read this as I entered into Greek!
This is an excellent book to help you in first year Greek. I used it to quickly relearn English grammar rules which are essential to learning your Greek. I used it along with Bill Mounce's Basics of Biblical Greek. If you have been out of school for awhile, and are starting Greek, buy it.
