For the record: I consider this book a great one and feel good about spending my precious roubles (saved from Putin's hands) on it.What is good:I like the artwork. My kids love the artwork. I like what this book is about. Quality of science is, well, good non-fiction. Not a thesis, not a monograph - pretty easy to read. Not every idea from this book is OK with me, but as a starter - this book is great. What is bad:Dear publishers, you did 2 things bad. Not. Awful.1. Bookjacket is published on paper which is terrible to touch. Really. Try it.2. Major drawback. You print EXCELLENT paintings of animals and landscapes on page spreads. As a result, lots of animals are unseen. You have to break the book to get a good glimpse on them. Fold-out pages are MUCH MORE useful.

This beautifully illustrated book covers the two leading theories of the recent extinction of ice age megafauna worldwide (Human Overkill vs Climate Change), and touched on several others. It's quite the page-turner, something rare for this sort of book. It gave me quite a bit more information on the topic without overloading on technical jargon. The author presents as much as is currently known, attempting to remain balanced, offering evidence to support/contradict each theory. Also, know going in the book is an examination of the extinction event, rather than an in-depth look at megafauna species alive at that time. Certainly noteworthy species are remarked upon, and aspects of animal biology and ecology are addressed at times, but it's not a field guide to Pleistocene wildlife. In the end, the jury is still out on the final culprit. None of the theories presented perfectly answer the known information. Most likely multiple culprits in different circumstances are to blame. As in so many other things, it's not so cut and dried, but the reader is left with a far greater understanding of the issues. And did I mention the wonderful illustrations?I found this book to be highly engaging and informative, and definitely recommend it to anyone with an interest in paleontology and natural history!

I've been interested in mass extinctions for a while.I hoped to gain some clarity into this event. When I finished to book, I knew far more about the animals, their environments, and fates, but I didn't get a definitive answer to why it happened. Not a fault of the author-it's just impossible to ascribe a single cause, similar to the Big Five mass extinctions. These tend to be 'Murder on the Orient Express' events, with multiple killers.I wanted a simple answer, and it doesn't exist at this time. The book is worth a read if you don't mind being left with uncertainty-a common aspect of the study of the ancient world.

I take exception to the "theory" that humans over hunted the megafauna of America ! The population density had to be on the order of, maybe, 50 people in a square mile, 20,000years ago! Please, please think of the nonstop killing they would have to do to achieve this! The impact of a great comet or asteroid took out the megafauna AND the Aurignacian and/or Clovis people who hunted them. There is very good evidence for the impact around 13,000years ago.Yes, the people of today are very good at causing extinction events, but 13,000years ago, not so much!

Both a beautiful book and a thorough book about Pleistocene extinctions. The author explores the most current hypotheses in depth, especially the standing idea that humans have unilaterally caused large animals to disappear world wide through over hunting. While this has been the central thesis since the 60’s, there are many questions raised by newer data that throw doubt on some aspects of it. For example, the lack of extinct camel and horse bones at kill sites and the presence everywhere of extant bison bones. We still don’t know why camels and horses died out while bison still survive today. It may be that climate change has more to do with it than has been given credence in the past. The book is a treasure for it’s many beautiful illustrations.

Really enjoyed this book. Wonderful read. Illustrations are really nicely done.

The book is easy to read and understand. I liked the illustrations. The service was fast also.
