Not very useful for Xterras! Wish they would come out with a book for just Xterras. This one is too vague with Xterras.

I buy most of my car repair manuals from Half price books, if possible. Can't go wrong paying half for something hardly even looked at.

I broke some clips trying to pry things apart, it would have been more useful if it tells you which direction to pull so you know how the clip will come out. Also I couldn't find the diagram for the cargo light in my Frontier. The top brake is in between the cargo lights, so I tried looking there and also for the interior light, but both diagrams don't mention about the truck bed cargo light. I can't get it to work even with new bulbs.The manual is ok, but not great. I just search youtube for videos of other people doing it. I would have paid twice as much if they sent a DVD or 2 or how ever many it would take to show you everything. Maybe even $50 if the videos were fully comprehensive.

I have owned Haynes books in the past, often good, but for Pathfinder repair this is very poor. It might be fine for the other models listed, but don't bother if you are a Pathfinder owner. For example, I recently replaced the plugs on my 2002 Pathfinder without this book (using info from blogs online). This book devotes a few paragraphs to plug replacement - but almost entirely related to the other (non-Pathfinder) models. The book does not even reference the time consuming process of removing hoses, brackets, and other absolutely necessary procedures to get to the plugs (they are not sitting in plain sight as the book suggests, not even close). The blogs online had way better info, down to how many screws, clamps, hoses, etc. to remove. Also, the troubleshooting in this book (for any model) is weak. You are better off troubleshooting with a scanner (Amazon sells them cheap, under $50).

I've used this manual to replace valve cover seals and brake pads so far. It's very good, but each time I had to call my local parts store because of big gaps the book left in instructions. Both times it was about how to orient parts that were different than the ones that were previously installed. They also suggest some measures that are unnecessary. But such is to be expected when they are dispensing general directions for repairs.If this is your first time venturing beyond oil changes, I suggested you talk to a few people at your local parts store about what you are planning to do, and how difficult it may be. Also, make sure you read the instructions AND warning label on all of the products you use. When the book tells you to use breathing protection do it. For example, brake pads contain asbestos which is highly carcinogenic when inhaled, and some accumulates as dust around the brakes.I would also recommend buying chemical resistant gloves when using the various cleaning chemicals it suggests using. Brake cleaner, for example, will actually eat through latex gloves.All-in-all, I'm very satisfied with the book. And have saved around $1000 with only 5-6 hours of work!

Nice manual, just enough to get you through without a full shop manual. Great vendor.

It didn't help at all when my husband was replacing the tailgate handle. The pictures showed parts for other models and not the part for the 2001 Nissian Frontier (1 vs. 2 levers). Waste of money but we will make the best of it and pass the book onto a friend who does side work fixing vehicles.

This book has been amazingly helpful for this french horn player. As of two months ago, I couldn't go above a high g. Now, I'm playing consistently a's as well as the occasional Bb. Just by warming up with the chromatic scales, I've pushed my range up in a very short amount of time. I don't know the effect it would have on any other instruments, but I suspect it would be similar. For french horn players hoping to expand their ranges, this book is a must!

Even though this book is for cornet, I bought it anyway and I play French horn.It is very useful for horn in many areas including lip slurs, breathing, finger exercises, range, control, and overall technical crispness.Some of the exercises can be quite high for horn, but I expected that. It does the job and am happy with my purchase.

This book was reccommended to me by my new and current trumpet tutor, Glenn Bengry of Michigan. It is everything he said it would be. Enjoying practicing the exercises under Glenn's guidance. I am a 62 year old comeback trumpeter, having been off the trumpet since 1965. After not playing in over 46 years, with the exception of one period of a couple months in early '94, and then was without professional tutoring. I began studying the trumpet in beginner's band in school in 1959 or thereabouts, but quit just before my third year of high school was to begin, due to gum disease that resulted in all upper teeth being removed. I was just 16 years old.Have been practicing since Nov '10, took my first trumpet lesson in Feb, '11, and just had my third lesson last Tues. I am committed to constantly working on improving my trumpet skills, with the goal of performing with bands on regular basis starting as soon as I'm ready.Joined up with a local concert band last Nov., and have sat with them in rehearsal several times since, but haven't felt prepared enough to actually play yet. Feel now that I am getting very close to that day; have outstanding invitation to sit in with the band as often as I want, without any pressure whatsoever to actually play. Great bunch of people/musicians.Highly recommend this book to any comeback trumpeter especially as a tool for getting back their trumpet skills, and improving them.

I don't know why some customers say this book is for beginners. I'm a beginner and I bought this book when I opened it I thought people are right this is for advanced players but since I don't know the fingering for the lower notes so I wrote the fingering for the excercises on the first page and started with lesson 1 and 2 and I'm doing great . The excercises are going smoothly. I'm sure by studying this method everyday will make me a better trumpet player.

This is a pretty good book for a medium-high level player. It isn't a book that will work for lower level player, it is just to advanced. For more experienced players, it helps you work on your tone and technique without the stress of playing super high.

I enjoyed this book and found the information helpful. The author speaks to how the environment for dogs has changed with our urbanization and higher expectations that dogs must be under their owners control at all times. Also dogs are used less and less as workers and more and more as companions. The most responsible dog owners usually neuter their pets so these companion dogs do not get to pass on their genetics. It is the working dogs, the show dogs, and the dogs of irresponsible owners who are most likely to pass on their genes. Dogs are not wolves and they are not little people. They have a strong urge to bond to people. They live in the moment. Except in rare cases physical punishment of a dog is counterproductive as it creates a less trusting, less bonded, more anxious animal. If punishment is used it must be immediate. The dog cannot understand being punished for something in the past. Reward based training generates a happy, trusting animal. Dogs naturally wish to please. Most of their negative behavior is the result of fear, not an urge to dominate. When selecting a companion dog stay away from the most popular and thus inbred breeds where genetic weaknesses are concentrated. The first eight weeks of the puppy’s life is very important in determining its personality. Look for a puppy who has been raised in a home and who has had a variety of experiences. A puppy who has lived isolated in a kennel or backroom somewhere is likely to be fearful and maladjusted. Taking a young dog to obedience training class exposes the dog to other dogs and people as well as teaching it important commands. Much of this information is commonsense, but I appreciate the reinforcement. The book could have shorter. As others have pointed out there was considerable repetition. The information that was repeated was important information so I did not find it overly annoying. Having dog companions for most of my life and having trained several of them in obedience and agility I can attest to the value of reward based training versus punishment based. Dogs just become fearful when they are hurt. Eventually a fearful dog may become aggressive out of self-defense. The author explains what dogs are capable of understanding. It is unfair to hold an animal responsible for something that is beyond its capability to comprehend.

An outstanding and clear explanation of the history and relevance or lack of, in relating dog behavior to wolf or wolf packs as well as their roles past and present and issues with their nurture, breeding and training. However, if you have read 'In Defence of Dogs', know that it is the same book under a different title. Still, either book will certainly shed light on why today's behaviorists and trainers are moving quickly towards positive, rewards based training and avoiding things like 'alpha dog' and 'dominance aggression' and instead dealing with stress and fear issues and socialization.

Great read, and 180 degrees opposite to what the "celebrity trainers" espouse. I heard Dr Bradshaw discuss this book on NPR and thought he made enough sense to warrant the purchase. I'm so glad I stumbled upon it; Dr Bradshaw brings together anthropology, biology and history together to debunk the "dog-as-miniature-wolf" (at least as concerns our dogs --Chihuahuas) theory of dogs. Having done so, he then addresses the crazy training methodologies dog owners hear constantly. Education is a wonderful thing! So, why 4 stars? I found my attention wandering about after perhaps 30 minutes with Dr Bradshaw. Then, I'd have to reread. I don't like having to reread. But, he's a wee bit dry :)

Quite a good read for those who love and are interested in dogs. While rooted in science the book isn't difficult to read and I enjoyed the way the subject matter was presented. I found I shared similar attitudes to the author which no doubt helped with my enjoyment of the book. It's great to have this kind of information available these days. Well worth a read if you're a "dog person"

Starts off very slow (not quite as grueling as his cat book's first few chapters though), but it's worth atleast skimming through until you get to the meat of the book. Extremely interesting review of dog studies that leads to an analysis of the different training methods used. His logical reasoning leads to conclusions that are hard to dispute. I learned so much from this that will greatly enhance not only the relationship with my dog, but also that of my friends and their dogs.

This book is deep. You really need to be alone and focus while reading. Science says a lot about dogs, I think everyone who owns, and trains dogs should understand what makes dogs behave the way they do.Love this book.

It's nice to have a sense of what current science can tell us about dogs, partly because I always science interesting but also because it's nice to have a better sense how to interact with the many dogs I meet. This book provides an easy to read summary of such information, well-grounded in research but not bogged down by minutiae.That said, I'd like to echo a clarification some other reviewers have already offered: this isn't a how-to manual for training your dog. Despite a sub-title of 'How the new science of dog behavior can make you a better friend to your pet', there isn't much in the way of specific advice regarding how to actually be said better friend. Personally, I didn't mind, because as I said, I enjoyed just reading about the science on its own. For anyone who's curious in general or about dogs in particular, this is a book worth reading, just so long as you're aware going in that it's purely an overview of the current state of canine science.

This is a book for people who want to use FreeBSD as a server -- for mail, web services, DNS, etc. It's not a book for those who want to use FreeBSD as a desktop machine. FreeBSD makes a perfectly good desktop OS, but Absolute BSD includes very little information about setting up X or installing and using desktop applications. If you want to try out FreeBSD as an alternative to your Linux desktop, look elsewhere. But if you want to build a server, and learn an awful lot of incredibly useful bits about basic systems administration tasks (much of which is applicable to any other *nix system, including Linux), then I haven't found a better book for this purpose.I bought this book because I liked Lucas's more recent book, Absolute OpenBSD, so much, and he covers FreeBSD at least as well, if not better. His writing style is humorous and very readable while still conveying a lot of technical information, and you not only learn what you need to type on the command line to accomplish a particular task, but also how a SysAdmin thinks.Being more familiar with Linux, only somewhat familiar with BSD in general, I have gone from chapter to chapter and this book has guided me through installing FreeBSD both from CDs and over the network, upgrading it, and recompiling a more optimized kernel (which turns out to be a fairly painless process, if you follow the instructions in this book, for those of you who believe, as I did, that recompiling kernels is a big hassle, messing with the guts of your machine and likely to kill it if you make one stupid mistake). He explains every configuration file, how to set up (or turn off!) services, how to make your machine secure, how to make it useful, how to install and upgrade new packages, and how to provide web, mail, and DNS services, and his instructions are very clear and makes it much easier to understand WHY you need to do certain things as well as what you should do. Someone who has never performed any of these tasks before should have no trouble doing so by following the instructions in this book, and afterwards you should know enough that with a little exploration you'd be able to do the same on another OS.As the author says at the beginning, this book is actually meant to be read from start to finish, rather than being flipped through as a reference guide. What you learn in each chapter builds on the one before. Thus, this book might be somewhat less useful to experienced SysAdmins who just need to know BSD-specific information -- while the information is comprehensive enough to make it a good reference guide, there is probably a lot of extra space devoted to material that experienced SysAdmins already know. However, if you're a novice SysAdmin or just want to learn how to run your own server at home or a small one at work, I think Absolute BSD does a credible job of turning absolute novices into competent junior-level SysAdmins. So this is really a book about systems administration, not just FreeBSD, though the material is all aimed at running FreeBSD systems.For its intended audience (novice or junior-level systems administrators or people who just want a web server) and scope (using FreeBSD as a server), this is an excellent book. There are other FreeBSD books out there, or more generic books about Systems Administration, with a wider scope, which might be more useful for other purposes. But I would still absolutely recommend including this book on your shelf if you are going to perform admin duties on any system (especially *nix systems), or use FreeBSD for any purpose.

This is the sort of book I've been waiting for, since reading Annelise Anderson's "FreeBSD" almost one year ago. Michael Lucas is well-known for his articles, and his knowledge and easy conversational style shine in "Absolute BSD." Of the four books I've read with "FreeBSD" in the title, this has been the most helpful -- but not necessarily the most comprehensive.The strength of "Absolute BSD" lies in Lucas' understanding of what matters most to system administrators. Control of services via scripts, bandwidth throttling, firewalls, networking health monitoring, SCSI, RAID, upgrades -- these are what UNIX sys admins care about. You'll learn the most if you follow along with Lucas' examples. I tweaked, tuned, and typed my way through kernel builds, mergemaster, IPFilter, jails, MRTG, and other processes and tools. Along the way I appreciated Lucas' attention to detail, like pointing out the subtleties of 'top -S', and his knowledge of obscure tools, like 'sockstat' or 'vmstat'."Absolute BSD" does have a few flaws, and I almost gave it four stars. I was sad to see no coverage of 'portupgrade' (though Lucas wrote about it in Nov 01) or using RSA/DSA authentication with OpenSSH. While his instructions for Apache were sufficient to get a basic installation running, I didn't feel BIND was covered adequately. I would trade the talk about these applications for more FreeBSD-specific material, like the excellent and unique chapters on "Making Your System Useful" (ch 10) and "System Performance" (ch 18). Beware errors in crontab entries (pp 190-1) and probably omissions in OpenSSL (pp 313-4). Overall, the quality of the material Lucas included in his book far outweighed my concerns. If you know anything about FreeBSD, it's that the developers of the volunteer project are almost too busy to document their work. Thank goodness Lucas -- a FreeBSD committer -- took the time to share what he knows!"Absolute BSD" addresses topics not found in other FreeBSD or UNIX system administration books. It's a must-buy. If you want wider coverage, try "FreeBSD Unleashed." For integration with Windows, check out "The FreeBSD Corporate Networker's Guide." For comparisons with other UNIX types, see "The UNIX System Administration Handbook." Beginners will still like Annelise Anderson's "FreeBSD." I can't wait to read Lucas' upcoming OpenBSD book.

With more and more businesses (All size businesses) and private individuals looking to reduce server/networking costs this book is a must read.An experience user or even a notice has a lot to gain from reading this book. The author, Michael Lucas, is an excellent writer. In a very easy, clear, chronological and concise manner he shows how to construct a useful system with FreeBSD.Please note this first edition of this book covering an earlier version of FreeBSD. The second edition covers version 7.1. Either edition makes a very fine addition to one's technical library.

My high school sophomore English students read Julius Lester's book "To Be a Slave" as a foundation for understanding the slave experience in the United States, particularly during the final decades leading up to the Civil War. To further their immersion into the slave culture, I have also purchased numerous slave narratives and other reference materials, including this book: "Slave Songs of the United States," first published in 1867.This collection begins with a 28-page introduction from editor William Francis Allen (1830-1889). In it, he writes: "More than thirty years ago those plantation songs made their appearance which were so extraordinarily popular for a while; and if "Coal-Black Rose," "Zip Coon" and "Ole Virginny nebber tire" have been succeeded by spurious imitations, manufactured to suit the somewhat sentimental taste of our community, the fact that these were called "negro melodies" was itself a tribute to the musical genius of the race."And this collection of 136 songs is, indeed, a tribute to the musical heritage of African-Americans. The collection is divided into four sections: I. Southeastern Slave States (82 songs), II. Northern Seaboard Slave States (20 songs), III. Inland Slave States (9 songs), and IV. Slave Songs of the United States (25 songs).Each song includes music and lyrics, as well as occasional notes of the songs history, origin, lyric meaning and/or use. It would be simply amazing to actually hear these songs as they were originally sung, but having the music and knowing these were songs that helped sustain an enslaved people gives me chills. These songs tell their own story, and it is a fascinating read. VERY HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Originally published in 1867 and reprinted in a more modern edition, this book of Slave Songs provides insights into performance practice and African-American cultural of the middle of the 19th century. Following the dialect and the purpose of each song as presented in the introductory material is a bit challenging but also rewarding. Especially fascinating was the explanation on the "shout" and the use of the music in religious settings.Meaningful as a primary source and a direct understanding of the use of the language in music, this book of songs is an important and necessary resource for historians of African-American music. Aside from some of the musical flaws in the notation, the music is generally clear with a nice balance of text and actual music. Thankfully this book exists, for without it, much of this music would be lost due to its lack of usage in modern culture. A careful study reveals many great and meaningful songs virtually unknown in today's world. Perhaps some of the songs could and should be included in the canon of fine American folk music.

Ordered 10/30, Received 11/2/18! Arrived in new condition and gives help on pronouncing some of the words / lyrics. Also, tells you if the words have changed over time. I bought this b/c i'm interested in the meaning to some songs i've heard throughout my life and i think this will be an Awesome read!

Look for the Dover reprint Slave Songs of the United States: The Classic 1867 Anthology for a better quality printing at a lower price. This publication in 1867 is, if I recall correctly, the earliest publication of African American spirituals in book form. It did not have the lasting influence of the pivotal The Jubilee Singers and Their Songs (Dover Song Collections) published a few years later, but this book is absolutely indispensable to anyone interested in the subject. The book is available free online with some searching but this inexpensive reprint is an easy read and easy to consult.

There are 136 songs in this book, most of which are no longer sung. They are simply amazing, musically and theologically. An example: "Come and Go With Me", collected in Augusta, GA, presents a major scale with a flat 6th and 7th, and the tune ends on the 4th. Unfortunately, the collectors, as went on for generations as standard procedure, did not acknowledge the names of any of their sources. The original "Michael Row the Boat Ashore" is in here; it is a rowing song from the sea islands, addressed to the archangel Michael as a prayer for safe passage; these lyrics are more striking than the familiar ones. Here are the complete lyrics to "Come and Go With Me", which is singular both in its scale and its notion that heaven is in the present, to be accepted rather than earned:Ole Satan is a busy ole manHe roll stones in my wayMaster Jesus is my bosom friendHe roll 'em out my wayOh, come and go with meOh, come and go with meOh, come and go with meA-walking in the heaven I roamI did not come here myself my LordIt was my Lord who brought me hereAnd I really do believe I'm a child of GodA-walking in the heaven I roamOh, come and go with meOh, come and go with meOh, come and go with meA-walking in the heaven I roamIt was reported that the freed slaves did not want to remember their old songs. This is, by far, the best synthesis of The Hero's Journey, i.e. the individuation journey, I have ever read. The author has a kind of pure god-given genius for being able to take all this enormous material, from Jung, to Nietsche, to Star Wars, to myth in general, to Joseph Campbell, to Eastern and Western approaches, to dreams, to the Goddess, and somehow weave it into a beautiful narrative that does not veer off into abstraction or mire one in a tar pit of academic jargon. It is at once accessible and yet, very deep. He also manages to include parts of his own journey without it becoming tediously autobiographical.Even for those of us who know this material well, Le Grice manages to remind us in a new way of the depth, breadth and importance of the journey, both personally and collectively. In that sense, it is truly enlightening. And perhaps most importantly of all, it brings hope without sacrificing truth. Hope for us individually, and hope for humanity.As a woman, the book holds a particular and special significance. This is the first time I've felt comfortable stepping up and claiming The Hero Myth for myself. Although privately I always felt a certain kinship and understanding, I was never comfortable claiming it for myself before because of the gendered language around it. That discomfort fell away for me largely because of the author's unique ability to acknowledge and then move beyond the gender stereotypes and open wide the door. He consistently reminds the reader that this is the individuation journey, for men and women alike. He doesn't patronize, either with content or with language. So while the book is terribly important for the masculine, from my perspective, it also provides an invitation, a doorway and a mythological foundation for women as we go on our individuation journeys. That's quite tricky to do. Even Joseph Campbell could not do it, because being necessarily a man of his time, he believed the journey was exclusively a male one. If I have one piece of feedback, it would be simply that I wish the chapter "A Note on Gender" could have been the preface. On the other hand, not many of us read prefaces so perhaps it's best left where it is.Finally, a note on the writing. Good writing matters, particularly in more scholarly treatments of a well-known subject. It really does. Le Grice does not disappoint. His capacity for synthesis is matched by his capacity with language -- lyrical yet concise, wholehearted yet never flamboyant. It is rare these days when a scholarly book is upheld as much by the language as the content, and that is the case here. In many places, the book reads like a great novel and was hard to put down, even for me, who knows the story well! In fact, a small confession: I have copied the last few pages, beginning with Hospitality to the Gods, and have the pages taped to the wall above my desk. There is such integration and hope there, as well as important reminders, summed up beautifully in these lines: "As individuation proceeds, however, your individual freedom, in one form, has to be given up. Your freedom, thereafter, depends on how you respond to the creative impulses emerging from your depths, which do not originate from your own conscious volition. … Individuation is the process by which you become reconciled to this loss of freedom."

LeGrice's book is a helpful guide for those that find themselves - bidden or unbidden - on a journey away from the materialistic as well as nihilistic worldview so prevalent in post-modernity toward realization of the Self and to the greater consciousness, psychological wholeness, and spiritual insight that it entails. He draws on the work of many trailblazers whose work is often difficult but essential to the task of the Hero and renders them accessible to those who might not otherwise be able to make use of them. He writes from a point of view of an experienced traveler and not that of a dry academic and yet his scholarship is readily apparent. So when you, if you are so blessed (or cursed!), have the realization that the Hero is not something external to you but rather inward journey through your own Psyche then I believe that you will find this work a worthy companion for your journey.

Another fabulous book by this author. This book should be studied in all high schools so youth could be exposed to some deep knowledge and wisdom not currently included in schools' curricula, alas!

I really enjoyed this book. It brings together phiolosphy, religion and science into thinking about myth and it's role in life today. It makes it apparent that we are missing out by not having good myths in our lives today. It is a bit of a tough read at first, but well worth sticking out to the end.

Well organized, clearly written, did not assume prior knowledge, and connected myth and our world today. I am using it as a text in my group sessions and lectures.

G Jung, Nietzsche, Campbell, Tarnas, and many others - and his own amazing insight, to present us with a view of our collective human adventure, on the one hand, and tools to progress on our own personal spiritual path, that is truly highly inspiring.MEANING : that's what this book will bring you, first. A unique understanding of things.And much more : "hope", for instance, because in spite of the difficult times we are going through as a species, KLG shows where all of this might be leading to.We seriously NEED that kind of overview, that kind of understanding of our predicament, to be able to go on with our lives in a meaningful way.So, thanks Keiron, for this new book of yours !
